View Full Version : I wonder if Tirerack ever thought of testing tires from different tire segments?

Like I wonder if they thought about comparing say the leading competitor from the Ultra High Performance group against some of the Max Performance (maybe even Extreme performance) tire group?
For example... since the General UHP tire is currently leading the rating in the Ultra High Performane tire group... why not put it up against say a Michelin PS2 and Bridgestone 050A to see how it compares? Hell, why not put it up against the Bridgestone 01R while they are at it to really show the difference between the three category and the different and why they tires from different segments cost so much more...

I don't think The Tirerack cares, meaning why would they spend the money to prove a product (unless they don't sell the 'other' product).
I'm sure The Tirerack leaves it up to the tire companies to do their own tests.
On a side note, my brother likes those Generals alot on his e46m.

They have the g's and stats for all tire.. If its in ultra high it is for a reason. If it would do better than eo1r than it would be in its category.. get it? I worked there and did some testing at the main branch, in south bend..

The General UHP tire is popular because, honestly, not many people drive hard enough to notice the difference in grip between it and the good tires (Yes, by that statement I am not only insinuating but flat-out saying that the General UHP tires are NOT good tires. They're cheap crap). It wears well and doesn't make a lot of noise.
This satisfies the general driving public who are typically morons when it comes to performance and hence the high rating.
DMB, Kev is saying that cross-segment testing would really highlight how much better the good tires are than the bad tires.

Exactly.
There is nothing wrong with the UHP tires. For the money and for 98% of the time, they are more than enough to do what needs to be done. Of course, some people also believe that while it may work 98% of the time, that one time when you are in an emergency situation... the "good" tire may let you down compared to the "great" tire.
And then you think to yourself, was it worth it to save the money on the tires then versus the expensive repairs later.

There's definitely a noticeable gap between Max Extreme Performance tires. My last set of tires were Max Performance RE050A (nonPP, nonrunflats), and my current tires are Extreme Performance Neovas in the same size (235/40-17). Neovas have my laptimes down to R-compound levels--really!
