Last night, I let my dogs out around 11:00 p.m. to go to the bathroom one more time before going to sleep. However, which I did not know at the time, there was a skunk in the yard. You can imagine what happens next. My dogs tear off at it -- but, skunk just remains, and waits for them ... then, they are barking and all of a sudden 'stop'. I was yelling at them to come back; but, of course they did not. I thought the skunk might have missed them since none of them were whining. I could smell skunk; but, could not tell if that was from the yard or from them.
So, like an idiot, I let them in the house and immediately realize, bytch monkey testicles, they are sprayed. The odor is so freakin' strong. I think, WTF do I do ... and immediately hop online to google 'removing skunk from dogs'. I found a site and it works:
a) take 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide;
b) take 1/2 box of baking soda;
c) take 1/2 bottle of warm water; and
d) either dawn dishsoap (no bleach or stuff) or dog shampoo (about 3-4 tablespoons) and combine it all in a bucket.
e) take a sponge and start putting it on them and scrub. Make sure to avoid their ears, nose, and mouth.
f) leave it on them for about 10-15 minutes.
g) rinse off and then use normal shampoo to wash them.
In short, 99% of the smell is gone. I cannot get it off their faces because well, I can't get near their eyes or mouth with this solution. Now, on to the house. The whole house smelled and my head was hurting from the odor. I also read on the internet:
a) buy APPLE CIDER VINEGAR <-- must be this and pour a bowl of it and place it in a room with the strongest smell. Now, this stuff smells like crap as well; but, much better than skunk.
b) also go buy some ground coffee and put it in bowls as well in other areas to help absorb the smell.
In short, this helped tremendously. I can still smell some 'effects' -- but, the majority of it is gone. So, hopefully this helps anyone that ever smells skunk or gets it in their home, car, garage, pets, etc.
I also would wear rubber gloves when doing the dogs. I am fairly certain, nothing got on me -- but, I still smell it because it's burned into my nostrils, or, else I'm at work just smelling like crap.
If you have pets, I would highly recommend that you obtain the items above and keep it stocked in your place. I had to run out to Bloom (driving like an idiot) to get there before they closed at midnight. Otherwise, I think I would have been really SOL if I did not get them cleaned. I also turned on all of the bathroom suction fans -- I think that helped a lot. Plus, now I am using my leatherman to try and whittle down my nails since the skunk smell is embedded because when I scrubbed the dogs. :eek:
