is there any way to reset this without going to the dealership. I change my own oil and im already afraid that might not be a good idea, ive heard dealerships may void your warranty if you do this

There are several diy procedures written up here and on other forums for a method using the cluster.

Another way is to borrow or purchase a Peake Research scan tool. It's a code scanner that will read and reset engine faults, as well as reset the service indicator with the push of a button. These are great tools for the diy mechanic to have.

We carry the full line of Peake tools at competitive prices, and we ship them free (domestically).

Click Here for details on our site (http://www.whatsyourconcept.com/shopCategories.asp?categoryID=143).

Don't hesitate to contact me with any specific questions.

I highly doubt that.......at least here in the Nashville area they will charge you.

Some dealers may actually threaten to "void your warranty" if you do your own maintenance, have it done by an independent, or use non BMW oil, filters, etc. They can not legally do so. Do a Google search for the "Magnuson Moss Warranty Act". It has been in effect for over 30 years and allows you, among other things, to do your own maintenance and use parts and services other than those sold by the dealer or manufacturer. It also puts the burden of proof on the manufacturer, in other words if the engine blows up and BMW (or whoever) says it is because you used a Fram oil filter they must prove that the filter was the cause of the failure.

If you do it correctly, there should be no worry.
