I was driving to Niagra Falls last weekend and in the stop and go traffic of our long weekend nightmare i came across a nice black E34 540i.

he was in the fast lane moving slower than me so from far i saw it was lowered cuz of lots of negative camber...he was rolling on Style 5's and thoughts cool, a nice E34...until i came to his side and there on the front fender was a 4.4i Sign from an X5 i guess....

i tried to get him to roll down his windows and talk to me, cuz i really wanted to know if hes just an idiot or did he really swap in an M62 or is there another option but he just looked at me snobbishly and ignored me. by this time there was a ton of space in front of me so i took off...

1. What a jerk....i really start to think that most BMW drivers ARE snobs....
2. What are the chances that really WAS a 4.4i? i'm slowly but surely moving towards a 4l swap and i wanna be able to explore all my options.

thx for the read guys...

i always thought E34 guys were eighter cool as hell or too old to know/care what they drive....guess i was wrong.

I doubt there was any chance it's a 4.4.

Didn't say it hasn't been done, just saying that I don't think there was much of a chance of it being done in this case.

...but very rarely. The old-school members may remember Jimmy2z, he was the only 4.4L swap I have ever seen. He also said it was a huge pain, because the M62 had to be converted to OBD-I, and none of the M60 parts fit.

not too many I think the supercharger was more favored for power
I saw a M540i with a 4.4 on the SIG website. Also saw a sweet sweet Avus M540 on there as well. Owned by one of the writers for bimmer magazine who also has a M5T.

Hartge will do it and charge you US$30K for the priviledge

If you read the engine swapping forum here on BF.c they make it sound like its really easy to drop an LS1 into an E36 or M coupe.

Definately possibly but not particulary easy, Hartge seem to only swap it in so they can stroke it to 4.7L which puts out 340bhp at crank. An example

I don't actually know much about it, but would it be cheaper/easier to overbore/stroke an M60?

If he's around "The Falls" I will eventually catch him. It's my backyard.
An e34 with style 5's will stand out like a sore thumb to me here.
A few blocks away there is an e39 with 5's. The owner is nearly 70 years old. I am trying to weasel my way into the will.

So far I am the only black e34 540i 6-speed for at least 200 miles.
The chances that it is a real 4.4 are worse than me hitting the lottery.

More than likely some douche who is sticker happy and has no clue that his car is a 4.0L

Niagra falls has some amazing cars that hang around there. One of my favorite places.

I did some research.Yes it has been done. You need to use a 1996 740i 4.4L OBD1 head and block. The DME is the same.Might need to change a sensor or two.

Hey man, I feel your pain... I used to live in Tonawanda. Everyone over there has to have a chevy... god knows why. At least the chicken wings were good!

Oh whats worse is, the MB, BMW, Porsche and Audi dealership is all in one!
