View Full Version : Spark plugs? Only Bosch?

I think that it's a good time to change my spark plugs. After searching and asking I've found out that there is no equivalent to the Bosch spark plugs.
On my ex-M50 I had some Denso Iridium plugs, that made a pretty big difference, and it's hard to think that for s50b30 there are no better plugs.
Anyone knows something about other plugs that may be better?
Thanks

I suggest NGK PKR 7A.
I have heard of issues with Bosch spark plugs with the electrode coming off.

i heard the bosch ones blow coils as well
denso irridium for me. On the 3.0L you can use the 3.2L, colder, a bit more power.

Yes the Bosch are the BMW ones.
In Australia the BMW logo is worth $12 for each plug! Bosch $18,
BMW $30!!!!!

The Bosh Y5DCC are the "stock" ones, but some friends of mine had problems with the engine not running as it should with them.
In Romania, they cost 21$, no matter that they are from dealer or aftermarket auto shop.
Will the NGK PKR 7A, or the Denso Iridium for the 3.2l fit the 3.0? They are the correct sizes?
I will go for the Iridium because they worked good on my M50
Thanks

I have IDK 22 iridiums in mine...

I found these cross references for the Bosch Y5DDC
Denso IXU22 Iridium ( Only application I could find was Harley VRod so check your Harley dealer
Denso XU22EPR-U Conventional plug
Using the Denso/NGK cross references comes up with NGK DCPR7EIX But I do not think NGK lists for S50M30 but this may be only because Euros are not sold in the USA.

IXU22 that's what i have on mine

I won't buy them from the same guys that you did. There is someone in my country that imports them. They need to be pre-gapped from factory?
On what specs they will fit?
thanks

You can use those spark plugs which are in E46 M3 S54B32. Those from S54B32 are one degree colder than those we have in S50B30. There isn’t any problem with cold start.

I consulted my engine builder (Chuck Stickley, very well known for building some of the best race engines in the US) and he said run the stock NGK PKR7A on my S50B32. I priced them at the dealership and they were over $30 each!!
Wound up buying them from sparkplugs.com, all 6 for $80 shipped. :buttrock

i think for memory i paid about $120AUD for 6 which translates toabout $100USD wihch is not bad i guess. the gap states 0.7mm. has anone experimented with running a wider gap seing we have a coil pack per plug??

You guys are talking about the 3.2l . We are asking for de 3.0l. If all the 3.2 spark plugs will fit, then that's ok :)
From what I see, I have to choice from NGK PKR7A and Denso Iridium IXU22, right?

The NGK cross reference to the IXU22 is DCPR7EIX.
Where did you get PKR7A for 3 litre. it looks OK as is a platinum plug with 7 heat range although you have to\assume is 19MM deep.
P=Platinum
K=Hex 5/8 Projetced tip
R=resistor
7=heat range
A= Special design
D=12MM
C=Hex 5/8
P= projected tip
R=resistor
7=heat range
E=19Mm depth
I=Iridium????
X= booster gap

On UK NGK site. Funny not on Australian site.
And the Iridium is cheaper than the Platinum!

Great news FINALLY the stealer got me the spark plugs :D (BOSCH Y5DDC)
and the best thing happened is when i asked about the vanos skrew filter....
The stealer guy was like :confused, but when he looked it up he found it :alright (its been there since 1998)
and another thing i want to check with u guys....can we use NGK BKR6EQUE on our engines???? my mechanic said that he usually uses those????
Philip A

With the 6 in the middle it is a hotter plug, and would probably increase "knock" under load.
This would be heard by the knock sensors and the timing retarded.
So the odds are the car would be slower.
However if you drive slowly everywhere , no problemo.
I cannot be bothered looking up the complete code, but suggest you do, if you want to be sure that the plug is physically the same as the one I cross referenced.

NGK marks their spark plugs out differently. When number increases, it means that spark plug is colder!

I had Bosch & NGK but I like Denso IK20 better

I guess you are agreeing with me because a "7" is specified on the NGK site and the mechanic wants to fit a "6", so it is hotter. And probably infinitely more available.

Denso IXU22 is a great plug, as are the stock 3.2L NGK PKR7A. The PKR7A is a fine-tip dual platinum that fires well stone cold or burning hot with high cylinder pressures. We used them in the Watts old S50Euro race motor for years with excellent results. Same in my stock S50B32 street/track car.
On the Watts new racing S54, it wouldn't even rev with the stock BCPR8EKP - kinda crappy if you ask me. We run racing plugs in the S54 and S50 motors at the track, and that's where you get expensive! $30 each!

Wow, lot of great info on here
I am running DCR7EIX and seem to be having a few issues. ESPECIALLY when my engine is cold (cant put it under any load at all)...does this point to the plugs?
