View Full Version : So I royally screwed myself (brake pipe broke!)

I am attempting to install my front BBK when everything went down hill, fast! I could not remove the 11mm nut on the brake pipe connected to the brake hose. I ended up stripping the nut and eventually ended up snapping the damn brake pipe!!!!

Now, I have to buy and install a new brake pipe. Has anyone done this? Please tell me I don't have to remove the fender! Also, anyone have any ideas what I can use to remove that stripped 11mm bolt? It is pretty much mangled. Also, can anyone verify that part #34326755526 is the driver side brake pipe?

TIA!

Oops...so you didn't use a flare wrench. Bad move.
About the only thing you can do now is put some penetrant on the thread/nut where it joins the brake line going to the caliper, let soak for a while and try to crank it off.
Or, just replace the caliper line along with the tubing to the ABS pump.

The pipe/tube is 34 32 6 755 601 according to the etk up to MY 2000.
The number you gave is for the rt rear.

Well, since I'm upgrading to stainless steel brake lines with the BBK, I don't need the caliper line anymore. I'm just trying to figure out what's the best way to remove the stripped nut and how do I replace the brake pipe itself?

Once you remove the tube to ABS pump, you will have air in that section so bleed well and cycle the pump.

Do you know which line I need to remove from the pump itself? I want to say third from front bumper?

Its called a tube, not to be confused with a pipe, which is something completely different.

i did the same thing on the rear tho...no biggie, its like a $5 part at the stealership. try clamping some vice-grips on there...thats how i got mine off

Did something similiar, let soak in penatrating oil, clamp on vice grips and then use a product called freeze off. You can get it at almost an auto parts store and works pretty well for an immediate break free.

Good luck and sorry to hear the day went bad, but, we are soldiers and are used to that daily, ain't we!

3rd from front of pump.
2nd is to pass side.
1st is to master.

Well, I eventually got it off with some vice grip. Got the other side off, no problems since I went and got an 11mm flare wrench!

Now, I have to deal with figuring out how I'm going to replace the piping...doesn't look to difficult, but doesn't look fun either!

if not vice grips,
(I just striped my left front and rear WITH line wrench)
use a die grinder,
but cut it at the pipe nut.

I just did my brake hoses as well.

a b!tch,
but nearly done w/ the whole bottom end.

I actually don't think it will be TOO difficult looking at it. I just need to bend the pipe and route it to the brake booster, and bend it to the wheel well. Of course, a lot of my FI stuff is in the way, but I think I can still get a wrench down there to undo the line. I guess we'll find out Monday when I get the new brake pipe.

What about just brazing/welding-on the portion that you need?

YEAH,
ITS A LITTLE FIDGETY.
We considered routing it through the rail,
but did some pre-bends, ran it through the original hole
and did a finger-tight-fight for 5 minutes.

I've also got the Twinscrew in the way of my left arm.

If you're replacing the left front pipe,
remove the right front pipe from the ABS block
and bend it out of the way slightly
to be able to access the pipe hole you're accessing.

If its the right front pipe,
I have no experience,
but it can't be bad.

I had to read the first five posts to figure out what a 'brake pipe' was. I thought it was something that I never heard of before.

Wow...what a biiiatch! Finally got it through. Probably doesn't look the best, but definitely works! Nobody is going to be admiring my pipe laying anyways :-)

Not getting enough practice laying pipe up there in KY huh? :confused

Glad you got it done. You back on the road yet? I want to hear what you think of the diff.

Haha, I'm still awaiting the correct size spacers to get the car back on the road. I have about 150 miles on the diff right now and it feels great. I just can't wait to get on the boost!

This thread is pretty old, but i was wondering if my brake pipe broke at the rear passenger side on my M. Does the Pipe go inside the cabin or under the cabin? when it goes from the abs/brake reservoir to the rear. I got in an accident and the rear brake pipe got pinched and it broke.

I'm not 100% sure, but you can just follow the tube or pipe and see if it enters through the wheel well...or just runs underneath the body.

You may be able to repair the existing pipe. If enough room, cut off the bad piece, install a new flare nut and re-flare the pipe. Or, if the break is too far from the end you can splice a new piece of pipe on with new flare nut.

You'll need a Euro type flare tool. I've done it twice and was able to borrow the tool from a friendly mechanic that works on German cars.

Might be a lot easier than running a complete new pipe. It was for me.

Yeah i was thinking about flaring a new pipe on, my uncle said he could probably be able to do it, i have no idea where he would get the tool to. But I cant really follow the pipe, it doesn't go under the car but i cant tell if it goes into the cabin.
