I've recently replaced my "T" auto gear knob, because it cracked with an identical part. Now, i'm just wondering if i have it on the right way...should the spring below it be facing on the right or left side? (This is a right hand drive vechile btw).

What spring? Do you mean the release catch? If so that should be on the left (for a right hand drive vehicle).
i.e. Your thumb on the narrow side of the handle (narrow from the shaft) and the rest of your hand on the wide part, with your fingers curling round to the release catch
