I'm about to get my first BM and wonder what size wheels would fit an E36. I was looking at some 17"-19" M3 wheels, here's an example: SIZE: 18"*8.5" FRONT 225/40/18 18"*9" REAR 255/35/18. Another set was 19' by 8" 235/35. Would these fit? And what do I need to look out for when trying to find suitable wheels. How about wheels off an X5 or a E46, would they fit? Your advice would be much appreciated.

Search. For the love of all things holy, SEARCH.
Offsets, ride height, camber and tire size dictate fitment. Start throwing sizes (ex: 17x8 +30) and setups at us and we'll do our best to help you out.
If you run '95 M3 alignment specs but have H&R race springs all around with Dinan camber plates (~+1"/2.54cm of height back... thanks Dinan!) then you can fit 17x9 +26 with 235/40 easily up front (roll just in case) and you can fit 17x9 +41 with 235/40 with quite a bit to spare in the rear. My rear arches are flared slightly so I'd really like a +26 or so all around.
That equates to, roughly:
17x8.5 +20
17x8 +14
17x7.5 +8
You can also fit a 255/40R17 out back pretty easily if the offset's in the 40s. I'm guessing 255/40R17 on a 9 with a +41 or so would look pretty decent; 235's a bit stretched.
17s are best for performance unless you start running out of tire sizes, then your next best bet is 18" and try to stay away from 19" unless you're just in the Bimmer for the birds then do whatever the hell you want.
