Cleaning carpet

My modena interior carpet has taken quite a beating this winter....what do people suggest for cleaning it? Should I have it done professionally, or am I better off on my own?

I went and bought a Bissell Turbo Carpet cleaner for my mobile detailing business. It's nice and small and does a good job of steam cleaning the carpets. It was about $100, or you can just shampoo them and that should do a pretty good job.
