View Full Version : 75 2002, what to transplant?

I have seen all the hype about the S14 and the M20 and I don't want to do something that is so common among the 2002's. What else would be possible (pockets aren't endless) that would keep the handling characteristics and weight close to stock? I am looking to turbo whatever goes into it(if I don't just build the stock motor into a turbo beast). I was thinking of a 325ix drive train transplant but am not sure if the AWD would be possible on the 2002 chassis. Does anyone know if it is?

Step #1: Cut out shock towers
Step #2: Rebuild engine bay with LSx... :devillook

If a guy can put one in an original mini it has to be able to fit in a 2002...

AWD in a 2002? Thats like wearing a rain jacket in the shower, whats the point? If you wanted to be different you could swap in a S14 and then turbo it. I bought a German BMW mag when I was in Spain and it had a 75 2002 with a twin turbo S14 and amazing "GTR" bodywork. Im not sure how much power it made but I have a feeling that it was a pretty decent amount. The good thing I see about a S14 swap is that since it is basically a M10 you are still keeping the same balance. Although if you wanted to get really crazy you could swap in a S54.

I want something that is different from anyone else. the S14 has been done. I have never seen a 2002 IX.

True but the S54 would be different and would still be cool because its in the BMW family. And there is probably a reason why you have never seen a 2002ix. It would be a huge undertaking anyway, lots of headaches and boatloads of cash.

This is different. The only time you will see this is if you go to Sweden.

Well I have changed my mind once again and am looking at maybe an S52. Does anyone know what type of modification to the cross member or oil pan needs to be done?

I just put a post up 2 find out about using a Nissan sr20 turbo. Plentiful, and 200 hp STOCK. U can put 300 on the ground without cracking open the bottom end. I would love 2 turbo my m10 (too Xpensive), but since we obviously agree on not having 2 use a german motor, there are few other options that are as seemingly straight forward. Already fuel injected (gotta recurve the brain 4 big hp), very dependable, and I am guessing, besides the usual motor and tranny mounts and drive shaft and radiator placement and such, nothing stands in the way of way fast and way different.

I didn't say U won't use a German motor. I'm saying UR open minded about using something else, and that puts U ahead.

You might want to edit your post and change "isnt" to "isn't" and "useing" to "using" before you get flamed by the people you are flaming.

ok...back on topic, what would need to be modified to slap a S52 or 50 into a 2002?

How about the new 335xi, I know the setup is a longer wheel base then a 2002 (obviously) but you might be able to work it if your pockets arent empty, plus then your already turbo save some $ there, not sure what that engine and all would cost but jmo!

you could always go built m30, that would be pretty cool, or just go s38 haha

How about SAAB Turbo engine? :)

It has been done, virtually standard 2.3 or 2.0 engines can be cranked to pretty high BHP by remapping the ECU only, 4 cylinder not any heavier than an S14...?

Not to mention being original with something that's rarely seen.

I saw a 2002 with an M20B23 (2.3l 6, mechanical injection, lethal electronic ignition) engine and four wheel disks from an E21 323i. The engine fit nicely, but couldn't use the mechnical fan because of limited space. I would expect the newer small 6 engines to fit, but would require a bit of work for the electronics.

I have already started buying parts for the 2002 EFI turbo build. Picked up a M10 block for $50, intake manifold with fuel rail, water neck, coolant bypass pipe, hoses and FPR from a 84 318 shipped for $270ish. Next will be all the internals for the bottom end then try to source a 1.8i head for cheap, rebuild the head, then get the Megasquirt. Might have the engine complete by Xmas (wife is having a baby in 11 days so time and money will be devoted to her and him). Once the engine is done, I will mate it to the 4 spd until I can source the parts for the e21 5 spd and lsd. BTW what would be the best ratio for the LSD?
