Turn signal from HELL!!

So I was in my GF car this week and I finally got to see what the deal was with this turn signal thing and couldn't figure it out. When she first uses her right turn signal it ends up staying slightly lit after use and when she brakes w/the driving lights on it goes ballistic and the turn signal click starts clickin away repeatedly almost like a machine gun. Any advice?

short in the wiring harness maybe? turn signal relay? I'd check the wiring insulation to make sure it isn't shorting itself out.

check the wiring harness in the trunk, like the one that runs near the trunk lid.
