View Full Version : MIR on March 29th
Just wanted to see who wanted to do a Test and Tune at the Capitol Raceway dragstrip in Crofton for the beginning of March. We were talking about this in the E36 forum and wanted to see how the 323 and 328 compared against each other just for shits and grins. So I figured, why leave the rest of us out of the fun??? So anyone who wants to come out for a good night of drag racing speak up! Afterwards we can grab a bite to eat! So far, it is me, Teuton, Andy, 328 is man, and I am assuming that Phillip and James will be coming along.
James-maybe we can get Ed and the rest of the Audi club to come out with their S4s and also that dude with the 996 with the GT3 stuff.
Phillip or Chris, can one of you guys park this?

Stuck!
That sounds cool. Not sure whats going on in March, but I could possibly be there. You could then compare 323, 328, and my 325 if you wanted too. :D I have been to capitol before, but not to race, I really want to though.

I'm game! I go to capitol alot but only ran there once. I'll try and break my 14.5 1/4 :az: . Granted it was over a 100 out and about 80% humidty but I still thought I could do better than that. My 60 was a 2.1xx so I'll have to try and get that down. If you guys are up for dates I would suggest Friday March 14th, its the first day of my spring break and the day before HIN in philli.

That's fine guys -- but, I would suggest running at MIR. MIR is having a test-n-tune on Mar. 1, Mar. 8, Mar. 15, Mar. 22, and Mar. 29 (all saturdays). IMO -- MIR is a much better track, it's safer, and in general, is just a much better track. I know it's far -- but, the staging is easier, the lanes are wider, and the track is not at a weird slant.
Hmmm....I will ask the audi guys though. I'm sure a couple of them are interested. See, most of them are not into 1320' runs though, I know KJ is not (996 guy) but, he might be willing to try it once or twice.
Look at the snow outside...!!

Anyway, where is Capitol Raceway? Ive been wanting to see what I can pull in the 1/4.

Capitol is in Crofton MD about 15min from the washington beltway
How about any weekend after March 20?? I will be away during that time.

Hey Andy, its Christian. I dont know if you remember me but we have met a couple times in the past. I have a Techno Violet M3 if that helps any :dunno . Anyway I was just going to say that the weekend of the 20th would only be good for me if went to MIR. That friday I already have plans and MIR test and tunes are on saturdays. Its cool though if you guys want to go to capitol on friday, im only one person and i'm sure you'll do what the majority wants to do. Anyway i'll probably be at capitol on friday the 14th is anyone wants to join me. Take it easy

Let's schedule a date then .... I don't mind Capitol, although for times, MIR is going to be better.... I think JD pulled something like a 13.8 at capital and then turned around and ripped a 12.6 at MIR....
Also, I couldn't get below 14's that night either we went.... and yet, ripped a 13.1 at MIR next time as well (similar trap speeds though) So, MIR looks to be about .8 seconds faster.

If you guys are looking for dates most saturdays in March would be fine with me. Maybe we could make a weekend of this? Friday at Capitol and then Saturday at Buds Creek. See how our times differ at the different tracks? Like I said in earlier posts i'll probably end up at Capitol on friday March 14th, its the first day of my spring break, but if you guys want to go to Buds Creek the following saturday I can probably can make it. Are test and tunes in MIR in the mornings on sat? I think Capitol's stagging lanes open around 5:30 pm so if we end up going to Capitol the earlier we get there the more runs we can each get.

Hey Christian, yeah, I remember you. I have met you at a few autoxs.
Actually, the 20th MIGHT be bad for me. I am travelling to Indian and coming back on the 19th. I will probably be all messed up once I get back.
How about everyone post the date that is most convenient for them and we will schedule it when most people can do it. Obviously, not everyone will be accomodated but we will try our best.
The purpose of this is to get together and have fun.
So far, any day after the 19th is good for me. I think it sould be good to do this while the air is still a little cooler. Hopefully, it should help our times. :D
Ok, so it sounds more like towards the end of March at MIR. Sounds cool to me. I still might hit Capitol Raceway some Friday. I actually want to see what my Explorer Sport will do in the 1/4.
Hey Han, I remember you tried to make it out a couple of times-you should go with us to MIR! We all know what your M3 can do in the twisties, let's see what it does in the quarter mile.
Ok, now we have other people interested in going, like madhatter and SilverStreak. So here is the date:
Let's hit MIR on Saturday on March 29th for test-n-tune.
I have the following people interested in this event:
Jed
Pete (Teuton)
Justin (328 is man)
Andy
Sunir
Phillip (///MRoadster)
James (NoSoup4U)
maybe Christian (96TechnoM3)
maybe ajm
maybe Mikey52
///M3Love
Greco540
maybe Ron (themadhatter)
maybe Dave (SilverStreak)-HOPEFULLY!
Phillip and Sean-here is a chance to see what Dave can do with your car.
Phillip can you update the title of this thread to read MIR on March 29th? or something along those lines?
EDIT: Let's all meet up at 10am at MIR for the Test-n-Tune! Looking forward to having a fun time!

I'll be at Summit Point on 2/28 - 3/2 but any weekend after that....1/4 mile dragging really isn't my thing but I'll give the LTW a go at it....hopefully it'll be warm and sunny but if its not I'll use rain tires....should I use road racing tires w/lower air pressure in the rear for the drag strip....remmember these have really stiff sidewalls which may lead to tirespin but they should hook better than streets when heated up.:redspot ....it'll be fun watching Jeddy and Pete fight it out for ultimate speed demon braggin' rights AARRRGGGG!

Sweet! That'll be cool to see the LTW hit the drag strip. What the hell, you know what it can do in the twisties, why not see what it'll do in the quarter mile! From what I understand, road race tires may actually be worse than street tires because of the stiffer sidewalls at the strip. Hey and don't forget Andy-his Prelude may be the dark horse! :laugh
EDIT: Here's a thread about road racing tires/R compounds for the drag strip:

Well I will most certainly come(something may come up in the next month but probably wont), should be a fun 2 hour drive to MIR! :)
Are there any restrictions or anything else that we might need to know. I have never been to the track before. Any limits on-age, helmet, clothing, or anything that I/we might not already know.
I will probably be there but I am not completly sure yet.

I know at Capitol you have to be at least 18 years old. Helmets are required if your car can run in the 13's (again, something that Capitol required). I haven't raced at MIR, but James and Phillip may know better
Mikey52
02-20-2003, 09:59 PM
Woah, helmets for 13's? Ive heard helmets for 10's or 11's but 13's?
96technoM3
02-20-2003, 10:03 PM
I think most tracks require you to wear a helmet if you break into the 13's constantly. I know at capitol if you run 14.1's and 14.0's at if you hit 13.9 they tell you not to do it again. They are pretty cool about that. Most of the other rules apply to race cars and convertables like roll cages. As far as cloths dont wear nice cloths unless you want them to smell like tiresmoke. Its pretty straight forward, like said earlier you need to be 18 to race or at some places have a parent there to sign a release.
Cant wait to hit the 1/4... :redspot

MIR requires helmets for 13 second cars.

Jed - let me know if you want to hit capital as well sometime.
MIR requires a helmet if you run 13.9's and below. In addition, you must wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt.
I will be bringing a helmet, and Phil and Sean, if you need to borrow one, let me know now so I can get one for you. I will try to have additional helmets if anyone runs below 14. Trust me, it's pretty damn hard to do.
I would also suggest getting to MIR WAY before 10:00 (that's when the track opens). You can get into MIR usually before that time, last time, I swear you could do about 4 runs in less than 30 minutes.
You need to get in there to have your car checked out by the MIR official. So, that means, alot of wasted time if you don't get there early.
Plus, most people that get there, fart around with their cars instead of lining up to race. After 11:30 a.m., it will take you approximately 45 min. to an hour to get one run in. So, I suggest we meet up earlier, have breakfast somewhere near that region, and then hit it.
Yes, it's hella early; but, to make the most of your opportunity and money, you need to be ready to race at 10:00. Also, bring cash for the entrance fee. I believe it is $20.00 to run and $15.00 for spectators. Exact change will help speed things along as well.
It's a good time though, seeing the other cars run, and seeing your own time. You'll see how good of a stoplight driver you are!

That sounds like a plan James, count me in!

Hey guys,
If any of you are looking for a helmet for the track, be sure to check the group buy forum. We're trying to get 10 people for 20% off any helmet at OG Racing.
I know, this is a cheap plug, but help the few of us already signed up to get 20% off!! ($300 - 20% = $60 saved!!) :)
Is this a BMW thing? or is it okay for me to join? ATCO is a more optimistic track as far as time is concern. A friend of mine ran 12.8 w/ his E46 M3 at ATCO. and at MIR he did 13.3. granted the track conditions weren't exactly the same.
obviously i dont know for sure, since I havent ran at ATCO.
regarding Capital and MIR, MIR is a better track. More organized, and prepped a lot better. I could only get 13.1-13.2. w/ 60' 2.1
At MIR, I did 12.6 w/ 60' 1.9**.

Quick question. Do you guys want to try and meet up prior to rolling into MIR or just gather at the track itself?

Russ, I don't think this is happening. Rain forecasted and there's a Mustang swap meet going on there that day. I think people want to try and do this later after the dyno day.

Pat has been calling me regularly with updates. So far everything has checked out and the frame is in excellent condition. Pat's been great and is making this much easier than I thought it would be. I'm currently trying to decide who to trust the body work to.
What time are you going to P-imports? I might roll up there.

What time will you guys be up there...I may swing by since the LTW will be prepped for VIR either Sun. or the following week before the event....Russ, told you the damage wasn't that bad:) ...anyway, the car will be better than before with the new goodies! Seems like Pat will soon have many bimmers there to work on....for bodywork, I'd try Kurz or Wagonworks.

Russ -- glad to hear about your shoulder -- hopefully you can't gross me out anymore ..:D
James-
While you are at it, you really should take off that strut brace on the silver one and put your UUC Strutbarbarian on there. It's much more functional brace than the hinged one you have on there now.
Catch ya there tomorrow morning.

C'mon Jeddy -- I'm about the "bling" --- who cares if its functional or not, the strut bar matches my exhaust elbow ... I thought you were down with the *bling* ... you disappoint me :D
Hey, are you sure your friend does not want to sell that Bowflex to me?
Shipping the bowflex will cost me $200 :angry
seriously, what difference would it make using the UUC versus the one on there now? I would think both perform the same function....

Well, first off, the X-brace you are adding will do the most for structural rigidity of the car. The strut bar will be a great compliment to it, if it is functional-meaning that there is no flexing in the bar. Otherwise it is useless. The one you have on your M3 has hinges at the shock tower hats. Those hinges allow movement and flex, thus not bracing the towers. The UUC is non-hinged meaning there is no flex and the towers are sucessfully braced. End result is that helps the strut towers keep stable. With hard cornering the strut towers will tend to move a little, which adjusts the steering. The strut brace really tightens it up and helps the car point better. Just figured since you are getting the X-Brace and you have the rare UUC Strut Barbarian, might as well use it
As for bling... datz whut the mad hot black out mesh grille and mah pimp azz CF roundel stickers iz for yo.
I'll ask my friend again about the Bowflex.
