I bought my '97 Dinan supercharged M3 several months ago. I noticed it has no crank angle sensor, which is at approximately 11 o'clock on the toothed wheel behind the pulley. The hole that holds it is there... what's going on??

OBDII cars have the crank angle sensor on the side of the block where it picks up a toothed wheel attached to the crank inside the block. The mount on the timing cover is a left over from OBDI M50/S50 days.

Interesting... the long-ass straight 6 crank means the front isn't an accurate place to measure crank angle due to twist...
