I know that there are many choiced to replace RSMs. I was looking at Ground Control, but they are 100 bucks and that seems like a lot. I know that people use the E46 M3 RSMs, and I am sure that there are other ones that work as well.

Either way, whichever brand RSM I go for, I am goign to get Z3 reinforcement plates, so that it doesn't rip out of my shock tower, or whatever.

Anyways, I would like some advice from people that have swapped out this troublesome part. Which kind did you use, and where did you get them? That would be great; and this will be one more part replaced on my way to the complete overhaul of my car this summer.

Thanks,
John

I have JT Design ones, similar to Turner's (but they are blue).

Yes, most aftermarket ones are 100$, but stock ones aren't free, and don't last as long.

If you look at the classifieds here, some folks sell them, sometimes used, sometimes new.

So, it looks like I am just going to have to bite the bullet and buy these for 100 bucks. Does anyone have the PN on the e46 M3 RSM, as well as the Z3 reinforcement plates? I would like to find out how much each of those are going to run me before I go and get some GC's.

GC and RE both have reinforcement plates, but I'd go for REs now that I have GC on my car since REs have metal sleves in the bushings wheres GC doesnt.

Turner Repair Shop RSM's. Very reasonable at $39 for the pair.

Lifetime gurantee and they do not put any additional stress on your thin sheet metal (Some heavy duty aftermarket RSM's are incredibly stiff....great for the track but not so great for potholes).

You are a wise man to run z3 plates. Be sure to correctly re-assemble all of your washers.

Good luck.

^^^

Wow! That is a great deal, and I like that they are supposed to keep the stock drivability. So if I get the Z3 reinforcement plates then they should be just as good as the REs or GCs? I would love to go with these, just as long as they are going to work just as well as the more expensive, performance ones.

Any input?

Correct. I would even say they would be a better street application due to the fact that they are still forgiving. For the track and auto-x guys, I would opt for the GC or RE RSM's.

At the end of the day, it's a RSM. As long as you’re sticking with a well-designed aftermarket piece from a reputable company, you will be happy with the performance.

E36's are expensive enough to maintain. I'm all about a part with a lifetime warranty from a benchmark company like Turner.

FYI - I run the Turner RSM's on my car and love them. Dead quiet and solid.

I've got word from Rob @ UUC and he told me that the Meyle HD's are great and that they've been running them in their race cars for a couple years now w/o any issues. He's putting together a pkg deal with these and the reinforcers. (I wouldn't be suprised if it also came with the necessary nuts and gaskets) I just emailed him for the price of the kit and when I find out I'll post here.

Just wanted to give you another option.

When I looked up just the HD RSMs a while back I think they were only about $45-$50. Seems like a prety good deal to me.

Yep, we're packing up the kits right now... Meyle HD mounts, special stainless steel reinforcement plates, genuine BMW gaskets and mounting hardware. All at a killer price. We'll post pics and pricing tomorrow.

These mounts are really almost indestructible with a "tapered cone" design that cannot be pushed through. The damping material used is OE-quiet, no squeaking or clunking. As posted above, we've been running these for over two years in our street and race cars with zero problems, and I fully expect they will out-last any type of urethane (hint: urethane does not like muti-axis force loads!).

I sent you an email earlier about the price, so I guess you can disregard that and I'll just check the website tomorrow to hopefully order up a set. Thanks again for all the help Rob!:buttrock

If you have standard single adjustable koni shocks, only the GC and Rogue RSMs allow you to remove the shock from the wheel well (so you can adjust it), without disassembling the trunk.

All of the stock-style RSMs (Turner repair shop, UUC, E46, etc.), require you to pull apart the trunk to remove the shock.

For stock, Bilstein, or other non-adjustable shocks, as well as the top-adjustable konis, this is not really an issue. But for those with the standard konis, you might want to carefully consider how much the convenience is worth to you.

good thing i am getting bilstiens...whew

And I am just going to say that I have never done business with UUC. But I just ordered this kit with the poly RTABs, and I am already happy with their website and service. the invoice that I recieved in my email was so great, giving me the utmost confidence that my order will come correct and timely. I am going to order many more things in the future from UUC.

thanks Rob,

John

quick question on the install of my new Meyle RSMs; is the reinforcement plate or the gasket supposed to meet the chassis of the car? I would have guessed gasket but in the picture on UUC's website it says "assembled" with the gasket between the RSM and the plate. They do both go underneath correct? Sorry if this is n00b but I didn't really know where to look for this info...

thanks

The reinforcing plate goes on top of the shock tower, making a sandwich of the shock tower sheetmetal.

It goes:

----------------------- reinforcing plate

----------------------- shock tower top plane

----------------------- gasket

----------------------- RSM

Sorry about the lame ascii art. This might work better:

ok wow, Im glad I asked :) So the rsm with gasket goes in from underneath while the nuts and reinforcement plate need to go in from the trunk. This makes complete sense to me now I don't see why I was confused before

thanks again

More than up to the task - like I said, we run them with the race suspension on our E36s. More than up to the job.

Any thoughts on these?
http://store.bimmerworld.com/shared/StoreFront/product_detail.asp?CS=bimmerworl&RowID=397&All=
My RSM's were shot and I put these into my car. They seem fine. No noise, went in easy. I don't know if they will last any longer than stock... but with a convertible, they are super easy to change.

I was going to get these:
http://jtdesigns.stores.yahoo.net/rearshocmoun.html
But to be honest I didn't have the 36MM 12 point socket and the cheaper ones look like the same design, just not as pretty.

So far they seem fine. If they don't make noise and don't fail too soon, I don't know how excited I can get about RSM's.
