you can get slightly wider tires, but it won't give you that staggered look. you're not going to get a huge difference. that's just simply the fact that you can't compare putting on a 1/4 inch wider tire to a guy with a rim that's wider by an inch WITH wider tires on those rims also. kumho escta all season tires are decent but i just run summer/dry tires on my bmw so hopefully someone will have a better suggestion.

so more or less you saying it will just look stupid and not get much wider so there is no point

the size is related to milimeters, so 10-20 mm doesn't make a huge difference looks wise. I would suggest you look over at tirerack.com for tires. Here are my experiances:
Khumo ASX: low life for an all season
Yoko Avid: prefer over the khumo

there's no reason to for common driving. with a slightly wider tire you get more options for racing set-up...like under inflating a little or over inflating depending on track conditions etc. for real world driving, i just stick with oem size unless i am changing rims or if the oem are cheap and undersized. we generally don't have to worry about that with BMWs but other makers like Honda are notorious for "under tiring" their cars. if you're buying from a reputable dealer or even online, a rep will help you out and they're usually knowledgable enough to tell you what will or won't fit. 330ci was just a weird car to upgrade rims for. the bolt pattern itself was already crazy and no one had the rims i wanted in the size i needed.
