Fellow M5 Owners:

I have been driving my new to me M5 for about 4 weeks. The car runs great...but I have two general questions on the gearbox.

1. Do you find the gearbox somewhat noisy? Mine seems to make more noise than I expected. No big crunches or whines...but you know it is there. Especially when the transmission comes off load.

2. Do you find that the tranmission transmits a decent amount of heat through the gearshifter boot and tunnel? Nothing major but you can definitely feel some heat there after the car runs for a while

The transmission shifts perfectly. It never grinds nor pops out of gear and downshifts at revs with no issues. It is very smooth.

Am I being anal? Or should I check more closely?

Check the oil.

I would -

1) replace the trans fluid with some Redline synthetic

2) check your trans and engine mounts, probably just replace both regardless

3) check the rest of the driveline (especially the flex disc, aka guibo)

As for the heat, yes you will be able to feel some heat.

^ agree with Seth.

Might want to do an oil change on it and in regards to heat, you might want check the tranny tunnel along with pulling the shift boot and make sure you have all the proper insulation and sound deadening material. It really should keep the heat transfer to a neglible amount.

A fresh set of engine mounts, tranny mounts and rear subframe bushings can really smooth out these cars. Whats your mileage? A rear center bearing can give you a low hum or growl for quite a while before they start thumping at about 15 to 20 mph (aka when they are really dead hehe).
