Well you can add that to the list of parts i have replaced. Apparently, due to my failing belt tensioner there was too much wobble and drag on the water pump pulley, causing it to eat away at the spindle. Happened 1 day before i got my new pulleys/tensioner in the mail.

All i can say is that im glad i removed my clutch fan, if i had not, i can almost gaurantee it would have killied my new radiator/hoses/hood/etc... I was also lucky not to be out on the road stranded when this happened. Say this happened to your wife or daughter and they think they can wing it home:rolleyes : instant blown motor...

I just wanted to post this to make everyone aware of replacing their belts, pulleys, belt tensioner spring, etc. Because a little tune-up can go a long way. I thought i would be safe driving it until my parts came in and now look, i have to replace my pump in a neighborhood lake parking lot.:(

That is all...

Damn, that sucks.

How many tensioners are there? I should add that to my list of tuneup parts.

2 on a 525 m50

a tensioner arm with a pulley, and an eccentric type pulley

my pulley divorced my tensioner arm while my family and I were on our way home from our vacation end of march... luckily I was doin 10mph & was only 40 miles from a BMW dealer... saw it in the mirror and knew exactly what it was and was able to get into some shade and shut it down quickly

yea, mine was just making a short squeel on start-up and idle. As soon as i knew what it was i ordered the parts, 4 days later belt gets shredded and the water pump is fucked. Didn't know how important proper belt tension was, until now...

After replacing the parts, it looks like i only needed to replace the tensioner spring itself, the pulleys looked like they were in good shape, oh well preventive maintenance i guess.

LMK if you want me to do that for you or atleast show you :) Like Attackeagle said, there are 2.

That sucks boone. Hope you get it fixed though. Hit me up if you want a second set of hands, I'm always up for a nice drive and challenge :)

just join us when we tune his car, there will be plenty of work for 3.

Thanks for the offer, but id hate to make anyone else suffer the heat of working in an open parking lot, swapping out a water pump. Ive just about rebuilt the whole top and front of the motor so the water pump should be nothing.

Like Jcbe34 said, we should plan an e34 meet soon, or we could just make it a day where we all bring our cars together and do some work.

Thanks for the offer. I just found the Excel spreadsheet of all of my car's maintenance and it's waaay more than I thought. I'm a happy camper.

I'll take a look at it with everyone else when I get in town.

Not to be selfish, but I'd love to have an E34 wrenching meet any day from August 20 to August 25. :shifty Those are the only days I'm in town. :(

The last meet I went to in Jan 07 had like 3 or 4 E34s total, the rest were E36 and E46 BMWs. There were a few others, but the E36 and E46 made up most of the crowd.

i keep telling people this especially with an m50...

i would also do the pulley assemblies(both AC+drive) they WILL squeel when you hit 120k, belts(both), pull plugs and check for oil...(if more than 2 have oil or heavily drenched, i would do complete valve cover gasket+plugs), check vanos breather hoses(2 if oily), replace lower radiator hose, check intake boot for tears, oil cover, oil pan gasket?(exp. labor),front engine seal? since youre doing the water pump..etc, otherwise you have everything covered...
enjoy
