Fuel Gagee

I'm having problems with the fuel gage on my 91 m50 e34 car. It seems to be very accurate for the first quarter of a tank, then all of a sudden it will drop down to a quarter of a tank. At that point it stays there until it is actually to a quarter of a tank and then it starts to become accuracte again.

Does anyone know why this would happen and how to fix it?

bad sender maybe?
thought I saw omethign on this on e34.net, or perhaps an internet search some 3-10 months ago.
