Monster Garage Morphs MINI into Wacky Snowmobile
Woodcliff Lake, NJ February 10, 2003.... How about a MINI Cooper that can claw its way over 4-foot snow drifts and speed effortlessly across a frozen lake? Is this the next new model? Not exactly.

A bright-red MINI Cooper was transformed into a larger-than-life, 300 horsepower snowmobile by Discovery Channel's Monster Garage TV program.

The program takes vehicles and transforms them into outrageous, but functioning re-creations, doing double duty not only as a car or truck, but as in MINI's case, a snowmobile. The trick is that the building process cannot take longer than five days or cost more than $3,000.

A team of five guest fabricators led by show-host and custom motorcycle builder, Jesse James, spent five days creating the custom snowmobile out of a MINI Cooper.

"Witnessing a MINI Cooper transform from a road-hugging street car, to a snow-climbing snowmobile, will be a real treat for viewers." said Jack Pitney, general manager, MINI. "MINI is an ideal car to be customized and that is exactly Monster Garage's thing. Although, I do not expect most MINI customers will go to such spectacular extremes,... you never can tell."

With the aid of the custom mechanical wizardry, the MINI Cooper morphs into a snowmobile exhibiting a raked stance. Skis lower under the front end and a pair of deeply grooved traction belts extend under the rear wheels to grip the snow and ice.

Once completed the Monster Garage MINI will be pitted head-to-head with a Polaris snowmobile in snowy Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Monster Garage's Jesse James will be behind the wheel of the monster MINI while Richard Petty of NASCAR fame will pilot the snowmobile.

The Mini Cooper/Snowmobile episode makes a World Premiere on Monday, February 24, from 8-9 PM (ET/PT) on the Discovery Channel. The encore episode airs Saturday, March 1 from 7-8 PM (ET/PT).

Oh definately not. That little monster is going to be seeing shows for the rest of it's life. It is going to be treated with the upmost respect and admiration from all who meet it.

Poor thing? I would have to disagree. This Mini's life is just beginning...

By the way, that was the best damn episode of Monster Garage I have ever seen!

I saw that episode. They put A LOT of work into that one. But it still didn't perform very well in the snow.

Considering the circumstances, I'd say it performed VERY well. 7 days for construction and planning, a 2500+ lb car and raw, untested materials... dude, that thing performed incredibly!

Stay tuned next week for the flamethrowing jetski!

mini snowmobile, porsche golf ball collector, and the zamboni, those would all be tough things to make, but i've got an even tougher challenge, how bout a fast civic that doesn't sound like its farting.

Okay... how about the 99 Civic SI... or maybe the 2002 Civic SI.

They are pretty damn fast... sound nicely tuned as well!

it was more a joke than anything since most people only look at honda's as 'rice burners' and diss them so much, i in fact used to have a crx as well as a 96 civic hatchback. Lowest ET in my crx was a 13.1 about 2 years ago before getting caught street racing so it was pretty fast actually. I've drivin both the 00 and 02 Si's. I love the 00 si, best motor honda has ever made IMO but if theres ever been a car that needs an LSD on it then its got to be the 03 Si. those bitches pull to the right like theres a 2 ton fat woman riding shot gun, that and the lower reving engine i dont like. altho i was told by my local honda dealer that the 03 si was very 'torquey' as he put it, a torquey honda, thats gotta be the biggest oxymoron i've ever heard
