I also have black, with lots of nicks, swirls, scratches, etc. Seeing that the car is 18 yo, I don't want high priced. I know it is probably asking a lot, and it goes against the grain of BMWness, but has anyone here tried the $50 paint job?

The car won't last forever.

hmm.. I may have to try this on some spare parts.. kinda interesting... Doubt it would look as clean with black though.. but for a couple of bucks, I'll try it.

if you have an air compressor (or could borrow one), i'd say borrow or rent a spray gun and try it yourself if you're seriously going to resort to rustoleum and rollers! When we did a bathroom remodel, my wife picked a cast iron claw foot tub that needed painting. I had a compressor, and a friend who has painted a couple of cars (decent job, considering). He gave me some tips and loaned me his spray gun, tub came out quite good, imho! I'd go this route before ever taking a roller to a car. It was not hard. If you can get your hands on laquer, it is really quite easy to spray, and sand out any imperfections. My friend did base/clear, and said it too was pretty easy, as you could color sand out any imperfections. His second attempt was metallic, which was more of a pita due to trying to get the metallic even.

I was quoted $4500 in Central oregon.......I ended up just doing the hood/trunk and both qtrs for $1500. It looks 100% better...but of course now the little things I didn't see before....are there. Then, you start the process of chasing those around the car and before you know it...you are spending more than what they quoted to begin with. I'd pay to have the car professionally detailed, rubbed/waxed/buffed, etc......if you can live with it then.....fine...if not, then it's time for paint.
