E87 Connecting MP3 Player through AUX connection

I have an e87 118d, i have bought a cable to connect my mp3 player to the auxiliary connection underneath the armrest, do i need to put it into auxillary mode to play the mp3 player. If not how do i get it to play.

from what i have understand from the overview of the car is that you plug it in the aux slot and the toggle on the screen to select mp3. pics of you car.
