View Full Version : Why Turbo for 07?

I'm thinking of either turbocharging or supercharging my car.

I see that BMW changed from a supercharger to a turbo for the 07.

Does anyone know the reason for this?

How loud is the turbo whine in the 07? How does it compare to the whine of the supercharger?

(Ideally in my mind, there would be no whine).

MINI Cooper S Turbo gets 36 mpg. It is more fuel efficient than the previous supercharged engine. 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds. 335i gets 30 mpg at 300 hp. 0-60mph in 5.3sec. That's impressive. MCS costs $22K and 335i coupe costs $41K. I will have my MCS in July:redspot :redspot :redspot

i have test drove both mcs in 06 and 07. The wine in the 07 isn't loud at all. The wine in the 06 sounds like a race car...

Comparing the MCS to a 335 reminds me of that Hyundai commercial...

There ARE folks who love the whine of the SC. I suppose it may be an indication of your orientation toward the motoring experience.

turbo makes more power, more torque and better power band. Less heat then the roots style supercharger. also better low end drive ability.

Also turbo can be upgraded very easily and cheaply. Making power on a turbo motor can b done really cheaply all you have to do is up the boost, not sure how this system is made but it can be done very easily. All you need is a basic knowledge of turbos and a few simple tools and you can up the boost. turbo will be much quieter. if i cant hear the turbo on my Duramax Turbo diesel this dinky turbo wont make any noise.

turbo is cleaner, as well.

So, more power, more efficient, and cleaner. Only dissapointment, no supercharger whine.

I really like the supercharger whine.

and working knowledge of how to reprogram a fuel map on a modern ECU. Also a laptop with and ECU access port would help. not that easy...

Well, you can get a wideband and water injection and make a poor man's stand alone. You can tune the water injection with a laptop allowing the air fuel to be corrected at different rpm's.

It's just a thought though.
