View Full Version : OC Wheel Wurx Finish Problem

I bought a set of rims from OC Wheel Wurx last July. I have to say I love the rims, no doubt about that, but I'm disappointed in how they are holding up. I baby my car, keep her perfect, and wheels on the car are no different. I avoid pot holes like the plague and run snow tires on steelie's in the winter (and have a beater car), so I truly do not believe this issue has to do with mis-treatment.

The wheels have been on the car about 8-9 months, and the car has been in storage for the past 3 (I've been temporarily moved for work), and around New Years of this year, I started to notice that the clear finish on one of the wheels was peeling off, and it really takes away from the look of the wheel.

My car is not beat on, and in the time I've had the wheels, I've probably only put on 4,000 miles (I live 5 min's from work). The winter in PA this year was very mild until Feb, so this started well before the winter crap.

I contacted OCWW to see what could be done. And I want to start this with saying that Mike from there is a really nice guy, and replies quickly to all emails, so this is nothing personal towards him. We emailed back and forth a few times, and the wheel was not covered under warranty any more (they have a 90-day warranty). He did tell me though, they have had this issue once a few years ago, but it was an obvious case of abuse and negligence. Since mine were not covered under their warranty, he filed a ticket with the Manufacturer's QA, but it came back that they were going to do anything about it. So in the end, he did offer me a replacement wheel at a discounted price, but I cannot justify putting more money into them.

So I guess what I'm trying to do is to see if anyone else has had similar issues with their wheels and/or any suggestions on what do to?

Because the way I see it at this point is that if the only other case they had was a few years ago, and it was due to abuse, this now seems like a manufacturing issue with mine.

Here are some more pics (and it doesn't have curb rash or are scratched, that is just the clear finish breaking off):

This is not cool man...I bought these same rims (BMW inserts tho)i can't remember HOW long ago(since 2004) http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4528392&postcount=143 I finally got the rubbers for them last week & this week. I am in the process of determining whether to stay with the 255s I picked up for the rears or returning them 4 245s. I didn't want 2 roll fenders or issue with fitment. n e way I'm gonna test the 255s on the rim this week/weekend. I haven't even taken the set of rims out the box, and I see this post. :eyecrazy

Man I don't know now. I wanted to ask how did u care for the rims...I'm a meticulous car care guy myself, and I have polish creme(mothers & some other polishing creme can't remember), but being as how this has a clear coat would u just wash & clean? It deff doesn't seam like the rim was abused for the time you've had them (8 months :95 )...My question is: Did u use soap(reg or car wash), wax, polish creme-which agent did u use on ur rims/wheels?

Suggestion: If there is a "polish" beneath the clear coat I believe a good polishing creme could bring out the shine. BUT its a PITA to do that everytime u wash or care for the car. I have a motorcycle with a polished rim, and its very nice when u get the elbow into it & it does bring back the luster or the polish. I usually apply some car wax over the polish after polishing to sustain the cleanliness. Meaning; the next time I wash it I can usually hose the rim down with water & MILD soap to get the dirt OFF the rims. Hence the polish brings out the luster, and the wax protects the rim/polish. It worked, but my rim was naturally polished. I'd hate for this 2 b an ongoing prob cause I have been looking 4ward to mounting these rims:(

UmMmm which size tire did u go with in the back btw?

1. strip the clear off of the lip and reclear it
2. strip the clear off and polish it, but they will need to be polished regularly because they will oxidize
3. strip the clear off and scoth brite them so they will have a brushed look

no problems on mine...
but they aren't manrays.

I Clean with a mixture of Simple Green and water (30/70)

I'd suggest just to strip them all, polish `em, zoop em and wax them.

As for soap, I use some type of Meguiars car soap, i don't remember specifically, but I always use a sponge or a mit to wash the wheels. I never waxed the wheels, I did with my old wheels for over the winter, but these weren't on long enough to have the need.

As for tire size, i'm pretty sure they are 225/40's. I used to have larger on the back with my old wheels, but they rubbed pretty bad, so for these i just kept them the same as the front.

I think ultimately I'm going to have them re-cleared, because having to polish them all the time sounds like a pain.

Have you used Zoop before? Just curious if is as good as they make it out to be.

its really something that happens to alot of wheels... my BBS style 42s have that same issue... i would take them to a wheel repair place or a body shop have them cleaned and if they have some corrosion repolish them then respray clear... it is the best and only solution, or else you will have corrosion, all wheel refinishers and wheel companies polish their wheels then have them sprayed with clear...
