I just bought a 2000 750il (46,000 miles, excellent condition) over the weekend and I'm already having problems with the fuel indicating system. I think!! Drove the car home from the dealer and the gauge indicated above 1/4 and the light was not on. She stalled and died in the parking lot.
I suspected it ran out of gas . I added 3 gallons and she fired right up. Any thoughts? I bought the extended warranty but it takes 30 days to kick in. Anything I can check ASAP before I bring it in. I keep the fuel level above 1/2 seems to run OK.

I had a simliar probelm on my 99 740il. I went to the gas station and put $40 of super in, started drving and noticed the needle barely moved. I went back to the station and told the guy to put $20 more in, after about 12 bucks, the nozzle kicked off. I started the car, and the tank was full.
I'm gonna buy some fuel injector cleaner and give it a whirl. It has only happened once however.

It is possible the fuel level sensor (and float) is bad. If you just bought the car take it back to the dealer for them to fix! You shouldn't have to wait for the warranty to start if you just picked it up and already have a problem that should be covered.

If the car sat for awhile with low fuel it could cause the condition you described. Run a few tanks of quality gas(premium, Shell) through the car and see what happens. Deposits can build up on the sender contacts and good fuel , full tank, can clean them up. No worries from then on.:) Enjoy the ride.
