I recently purchased a used OBC IV from clevertd and it works fine - only, it doesn't show the options/display on the instrument panel. When my car first starts up, the OBC comes on and shows the time as it should, then the instrument panel dings at me about 5 or 6 times, displaying my Coolant Level and Check Control. If I press the Check Control button on the instrument panel, it will eventually go to a clear screen with nothing on the top or bottom.

If I try pressing the high beam lever inward, nothing happens. The only way I can get anything to pop up is if I hold it in for 3 seconds, in which I can choose which option I would like to set as P1, P2, etc. But when I choose one, I can't get it to display on the instrument cluster. Any ideas?

override the OBC data.

Fix you coolant level sensor and check the CCM terminals for dirt and try again.

yep.

I am just getting used to having the OBC display in dash myself.
I had to first fix all the wiring problems in the hatch harness to eliminate the check messages.

Okay, where might those CCM terminals be and what is the acronym translation for this?

And by overriding the OBC data, do you mean that I should press the Check Control knob that's on my instrument panel? Thanks for the help so far, guys...

no, if you have a message that will clear it, but it still will not release the OBC display to the dash until the fault is corrected.

Check messages take precedence over OBC data in the dash display.
I guess that would be a good way of explaining it. Only if there are no check messages stored, will you be allowed to view the OBC there.

It's BMWs way of making sure you service the car.

Okay, I forgot to mention that when I was out driving last night, my selective options [Avg. MPG, Range, Temp., etc.] would come up on the display and I could scroll through them - this was after about 20 minutes of driving. But when I cranked my car this morning, the Check Control messages took priority over them and now I can't view them like I could last night. Any reason to why they decided to show up last night but not today?

headlights were on?

Intermittent contact?

What check control messages appear?

How's your electrical?

Bad ground wire, corroded terminals on the CCM it's self.

Weak battery

alternator

attack eagle - My OBC on the instrument panel displays:

Fasten Seatbelts
Coolant Level
Check Control
Owner's Manual

Blitzkrieg Bob - where are the CCM terminals?

I'm not sure how my electrical system is holding up - everthing seems to work, other than what I've mentioned here in the thread.

Coolant Level is probably just the sensor. This happens to me rather frequently. To clear the codes, disconnect the battery for ~15 minutes. As for how to prevent it from continuing to come up... well, still working on that one.

I'm a bit hesitant to cut the power from the battery as I think that was one of my problems that took out my OBC in the first place :help

Fasten seatbelts... never seen that one, assuming it is a sensor in the seat belt recepticle.
coolant level, prelce sensor, check for corroded contacts?
the latter two tend to show up whenever you have an Important (critical)error message

Its in the E box on the driver's side, it lives next door to the infamous LKM and a bunch of relays and fuses.

Take it out and clean the terminals with an electr o motive type cleaner.

CCMs measure resistance in the various monitored circuits, so any added resistance from corrosion or loose connections will make it start acting up.

Coolant level is a common dirty connector/terminal problem, or the floater do dad popped off and is running loose in your tank.

The seatbelt should only display when you start up for a few seconds then go away.

The CCM warning is the one that points to an electrcal issue somewhere.

I forgot about the "fasten seatbelts" on start up... it goes away after 5 seconds.
