Won't go into 2nd gear at redline

I'm having this problem that only seems to happen somtimes. All gears except going into 2nd shift perfectly at any rpm. But when I shift into 2nd at redline, or even 5k and higher, it either won't go in at all pulling VERY hard, or at best it will go in but takes a crapload of pull to get it to pop in. It never grind or anything. I Have royal purple synchromax in there, clutch is 3k old, have the Z3 40% reduction shifter installed. any ideas?

Depends on how many miles but,

Sounds like its been shifted into second gear hard one too many times. If you are running good tranny fluid that can only mask so much.

Problem gets worse at higher rpm because its harder for synchros to match the engine speed. Its probably worn out synchro's.

Royal purple sucks, gotta change it every 3k miles.

Yeah,

Try running Redline synthetic.

Its helped out a couple of my cars.

you're serious about the fluid going bad after 3k miles?

I don't like royal purple OR redline fluids at all. They're race developed, meaning sure, they work great but need to be changed often. OEM MTF-LT2 is the best shifting fluid I've found to date and it last MUCH LONGER. BMW claims it to be lifetime, I don't think any fluid is "lifetime".

sounds to me like your ballcup is broken or needs to be replaced...

how long ago did you install your z3 shifter ?? i had the same kinda problems, and mine wouldn't go into reverse pretty much at all , then when i did the same shift lever you have (z3 one) i also changed a lot of bushings out (look at pelicanparts.com writeup for changing the bushings) and it fixed all of my problems..

look into that before you just jump to it being the tranny!!!!!!
