Recently went to my BMW mechanic and they had a guy who is selling a 1998 540i 6 speed V-8. 160k miles, but they said it was clean. They did a pre-buy on it and these are the results.
-SRS Light on
-Check Engine light on
-Right Fog light cracked
-Car due for Level II
-Oil Filter stand broken
-All Tires need replacing
-Engine drive belts are cracked and need replacing
-Valve cover gaskets leaking
-both rear pivot ball joints and upper locating arms have play left and right sides
-Front rims are bent
-Tranny mounts are bad
-Oil in the engine valley
-Water pump leaking
-All power steering lines are leaking
-Right rear window Inop
-Belly pan is busted
-Front struts are weak, not leaking
-left front washer nozzle broken under hood
-Some coolant on radiator cap, coolant level light was on
-Clutch pedal squeels

The guy wants $6,000 for the car. i know this is quite the shopping list, and i am more familiar with E36's. is this worth the effort or should i walk away? Thanks in advance.

I'd say walk away. I paid $7,500 for mine, automatic, and all it had was a leaky radiator. The V8's are a bit harder to work on than the E36's. Find out why the engine light is on, but if you fix all the stuff listed yourself, I'd bet you would spend 2-3 grand easy depending on what tires you put on it, and if you could find a deal on new front rims.

No way. It's obvious the PO let everything go on the car for the past year at least. It could cost you 2 grand to fix, it could be 10. You are better off paying more for one that's perfect.

Are you kidding? Run--and never look back.
