The 740i gets a real facelift.
This is how the car was:

I bought this complete facelift on Ebay.de:

And now we are started to paint the car in Alpina blue II:

Man that's a gorgeous color! As mentioned above, don't leave us hanging :) I'm interested in seeing some engine bay as-they-paint pics if you get any. I've always wondered when they change color if they have to remove every little thing from the engine bay or not. Sounds like a ton of work.
I would love to have mine repainted. And I just want the same color -- black.
I couldn't tell by the pictures, but did they sand off the clear coat?

Holy Crap! If you're going to paint your car a different color this is the way to do it! It looks like they even stripped down all the doors before painting them. Any idea of what the total number of hours are for this paint job? This probably would be the best paint job I've ever seen.

Thats right, all doors, hood en trunk are totally stripped before painting. I don't know exactly how many hours it took but it was a lot of work. Its even more work to fit it all together, I don't mind because I do it all myself with a little help from a friend who is a car mechanic.
Only thing I don't do myself is painting the car, thats the job of another friend of mine.

http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/808/img4197webqb1.jpg
It's referred to as edging, it allows the painter to paint in a uniform motion not stopping to go around corners and trying to get the paint into hard spots, this is the right way as it get a full coat of paint on the jambs and openings. Only thing i would of done differently is taking out the frt & rr glass, but they may still do this when it come time to BCCC (base coat / clear coat)

Cabo, on this forum, said he gets a great deal by going to Mexico and having the job done there. From the sound of it, you could get quality painting for a very low price.

Wowch! (That's WOW and ouch thrown together! :D) Thanks for setting the bar 'up there' on this project!
As for Fandom for the ride... they are mobile poetry. ...and no poetic license needed as they have diplomatic immunity. E38s have even something more over the 65s & 66s... at least for me. I have always liked this platform, but until owning one... I never really knew.
Now when I see them, I know what they have deep down inside... that something that is not so obvious on the surface. A certified sleeper, if you will. Unless you are just looking at it not from a perspective of performance, but one of luxury... those little altimas and the like can run past me all day on the highway -- I will sit here, enveloped in my Bimma's quality and get to the gig when I get there!
Just a few of my pennies, there.
Keep the pix coming, please!

That "Alpina Blue" is a great color for the 7. As a matter of fact, it is a great color period. I can think of several cars that that particular shade of blue would look great on. Excellent job. I'm pretty sure we're all looking forward to seeing the finished project.

its less than $70 pre painted. The match to my car ( Cosmos Black) was near perfect. I am very happy with it.

$6000 for a full transformation is not bad at all. That would cost twice as much here in the U.S.A.
That car will be the nicest E38 evaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar.

This gives me such a hard on to watch. I want to do so much to Silva. I wish I was still stationed in Germany right now. I would have the hottest 7 when I came back to the states. Great pics, and a job well done on the 7. Let us see her completed. I beg of you.

Why are these trim parts black? Why are they not also Alpina Blue? Maybe these are separate trim pieces? I think I'm confused with what I am looking at.

Drop dead gorgeous color, amazing job!
Brings back memories of my 85 735 re-paint. I checked on her everyday, when they had her stripped down and primed, I walked right by her, didn't even recognize her. Not nearly the job you have done, that's incredible.

They are original 20" Alpina's.
Guys, thanks for all the compliments. :clap

that is the only way to do a color change...you won't have paint lines/edging in door jams or trunk openings, etc. BAD thing remains and worth a big loss on resale is the wrong color under the hood, firewall, etc. I would even go so far as to paint the doors, hood an trunk off the car then let paint cure for 30-45 days then reassemble. Again the drawback, especially with a heavy metalic - panels have to be painted in the the same orientation as they will be on the car or the metalic will not flow the same as the panel next to it after reassembly. It may not match even tho painted at the same time with the same formula on the paint. Another problem especialy if going the other way - dark to silver or red, etc. primer or base should be the same or this will effect the final color shades. This is very necessary with the silver/white/red or lighter colors. Going from silver to the dark blue - not as important for matching.
I would not buy a car with a color change - it might be very innocent as above or it might be be a big cover up on a salvage repair!!!!!!! :nono

Around the engine is simple grey, not silver and no metallic (it's original) and it stays like this. All the other parts are painted on the inside. (hood, trunk and doors)

I loved the movie, well put together.....
Your friends do some great work.....
It looks like money well spent to me....
I noticed that your video had a tag on it that said the newest Alpina Blue II....
Is this the same colour as the E38 B12 ? or is it the colour of the New B7?
Also, I was wondering if you were gonna apply the Pinstripe Deco Kit to finish off the Alpina facelift?
Your thread has got me very antsy waiting for my Softlines to arrive from Alpina......T-Minus 10 days and counting....I cant wait :buttrock

You mean the interior? If so, the interior is black leather and stays so.

The colour is from the newest B7, B5 or B3...... the older Alpina blue from a B12 has no pearl effect in it.
And no I'm not gonna apply the deco kit from Alpina, if it was an original Alpina then I would do it.
