Hey everyone. Alrite so im posteing this for my friend because he doesnt have an account here and his computer is broken. But anyway so he has a black on black 750il and he was driving to his school the other day. all of a sudden when he went to pull it in the car wouldnt move the engine revved up and it just didnt move. Then last nite we went to take it out again he pulled the car out backed into a spot to take pics of it and the car wouldnt move when he went to go forward. When he put it into park we heard a sort of grinding noise like a shaft spinning and rubbing against metal. So then we took the car and lifted the passenger rear up when he went to spin the wheel it spun freely so we then lifted the driver rear up. When he did that he sort of picked the wheel up we heard a pop and then he lowered the car and it then worked. Anyone have any idea of what this could be? Any help would be perfect thanks allot.:)

Well... if it's a 750iL... what year is it?
Sounds like possibly a bad trans.. but there's no way to tell unless you have the ability to properly diagnose it.

Propabily a transmission.

Well the car is not throwing any fault codes and we dont think its the tranny because when he lifted it and pushed the driver side rear wheel in it there was that pop and then the car drove fine, but this has happned twice now so im guessing there is something going on. If its anything it would most likely be in the differential or the axel shafts like a previous poster said i just wanted to see if anyone had this problem before and might know exactly what it was. Anyone else with ideas lemme kno
Oh and the year is 96 its a 96 black on black with the bulletproof package with 110,000 miles

What do the colors or options have to do with your problem? LMAO

(A proper reply is lacking, for owners of limos.)
As bizarre as this sounds, please let me know if you can do the following:
1. Can you open the sunroof all the way (i.e., wide open -- not to the vent position)?
2. Do the rear windows go all the way down?
Many problems with 750iL bulletproof models can be diagnosed by the two above tests.
By the way, I'd be very suspicious of any posts on April 1st. They tend to steer you in the wrong direction. I'd be especially worried if the first letters of the sentence of a certain post spelled certain words.

I dont know everyone kept asking me questions so i layed it all out what the car was exactly. And if we could leave out the b.s posts that would be helpful we are really trying to get this fixed without his dad figureing it out although it is his car his dad gets pissed. Thanks for everyone who posted serious things

I think the "b.s" posts, as you call them, come from the fact that you almost certainly DO NOT have the "bulletproof" package. If the rear windows roll down then you DO NOT. Posting something that is almost certainly untrue on April Fool's Day is likely to raise a few eyebrows. The question, stated plainly, is this: Was your post about the car being "bulletproof" a joke or just a lack of knowledge?

Year/month of production?
If no such info, I cannot help you, because there are plenty of wiring diagrams.
But anyway so he has a black on black 750il
The color does not matter.
E32, E38, E65, E66?

well its a 96 its not my car i can probably have the production date tomorrow, it definatly is bulletproofed he had the front windows down and the glass was like an inch or like inch and a half thick, thicker than any window that i have ever seen on a car with a huge black liner on the tip. This is not a joke we really want to drive this thing soon because his dad offered to put a upgraded suspension on it whichever he wants. As for the wireing diagrams i dobut its electrical im sure its mechanical and i think its in the rear driver side, guessing somewhere around the differential or rear axel's etc. thank you bmw5868 for suggesting the axel shafts. Any ideas its april 2nd about to be 3rd

If you had the windows "down" then it's not armored. The protection models had fixed windows in the rear and the front only move halfway. They also had a steel sunroof, or no sunroof at all. You have the "security glass." It's a polycarbonite film sandwiched between two layers of glass. It prevents someone from smashing the windows and grabbing you but it won't stop a bullet. Feel free to test this if you choose.

the glass was like an inch or like inch and a half thick, thicker than any window that i have ever seen on a car with a huge black liner on the tip.
That glass is standard on the 750iL, it is not even nearly bulletproof though, its just break resistant.
The glass on the protection model is even thicker. You can check the VIN on realoem.com and also a protection model will have 750iLP on the VIN plate (near driver's door) and probably command a price of at least 30K. Also as mentioned above the protection model does not have a sunroof or rear winding windows and the front windows only open part way.
Its a pretty common misconception, 750iL's are regulary wrongly listed on ebay and autotrader, either knowingly or otherwise. I just hope whoever sold it to your Dad didnt sell it to him on that basis that is is a protection model or that it has bulletproof glass.
I would guess it is the differential or transmission those are the only things that i would think of that would grind and make the wheels move. basically it should be something around there if the sound was in the rear of the car it is most likely the diff. I definitely think it is an E38 750 well the poping noinse was something was not connected to the rear differential and then suddenly reconected and probably would be the shaft link to the diff. This is if the sound was in the rear but I would just take it to somebody who would be able to take out the diff and see some damage since it grinded.

Yea, don't take it personally dude. You just wouldn't believe how many people are (usually) incorrect when they say they have a bulletproof 7. The thick standard glass aids in the self-delusion. Maybe Tupac made the same mistake....

If it was bulletproof, I think you would notice when you drove it.It would weigh a lot more, and wouldn't there be things like run flats and other security items?

Axle shafts can pop in and out causing this to happen. You'll need to pop them out and inspect the shaft. If the splines don't apperar to damaged, :) . You should replace the retaining rings inside the diff, not that hard.
If the splines are damaged, diff and flanges need to be replaced; :( $$$$$.

the front windows dont open much probably about four inches? approx theres no sunroof ill run the vin i guess who knows..Actually what happened is there was this dealer my friend was real good friends with and he got the car they went there and said they wanted it that day so he sold it to them for hte price of the regular il and then i guess hes pissed that he sold it soo cheap or something but you all might be right. Who knows regardless thanx allot for the above poster and the axel shafts/spline/rings info well definatly be checking it this weekend.

Just check the VIN sticker. The Model will show 750iL P for the protection model. A lot of people try to pass off the 750iL A as an "Armored" version, but the A stands for Automatic.

I still have my BS flag up here. If your friend's il was really a bulletproof model, there is no way in hell you would be changing the springs on the car. You would need to have a custom spring rate designed to handle the extra weight of the car since the bulletproof model is REALLY heavy and is not a car where you can simply upgrade the suspension by making a phone call to Turner or Ground Control. No, you would be making a phone call to Eibach, and paying them a few thousand dollars (at least) to produce one-off springs for the car.
This is just retarded.

the springs are 6525 dollars shipped i forget what company but he had the car weighed n stuff n the spring rate etc and were waiting to have them officially paid for and sent.. regardless of that stuff were checking the diff tonite thanks everyone
