Hi there,
I am going to sell my 2003 & series and would like to remove all of the data is has stored for the "Top 8" phone numbers I have called and the most recent etc. I was able to delete the Address Book in the voice command but can seem to remove these lists.
Is there a way to reset all of these personalized settings in the Communications and Navigation etc?

When I bought my old E38 CPT8000 phone system off of eBay, the previous owner's entries were in the Top-8 list, so I have not seen a way to erase those without simply replacing them.

I suspect brute force may be in order. If you have "free nights and weekends" on your cell phone plan, simply find 8 numbers that lead to automated systems and dial them again and again until you wipe the Top-8 list clean of your personal data.

If you have Bluetooth, maybe you can unpair all the phones by following the instructions in the BT manual. I think you would have to hold the pairing button down while turning the key from position 0 to 1, and hold it for 10 seconds or more (until msg appears on display). But I can't say for sure if that clears the Top-8...it's worth a shot, though, as it's surely easier and faster than brute force.

Worst case, disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and see if that works.

When you say disconnect the battery do you mena the phone battery? I do not think it is bluetooth. Is the top 8 in the phone memory or the car memory??

My understanding is that Top 8 is in the car's electronics, since in the two BMW-enabled phones I have used (one a CPT8000, one a RAZR via Bluetooth), the Top 8 function (a) did not exist on the phone, and (b) appeared to be isolated from the phone -- i.e., when I bought a used CPT8000 and electronics, even though I switched the phone over to my name and did a master reset, the Top 8 list was unchanged.

And when I say "disconnect the battery", I mean the car one. I don't think disconnecting the battery on the phone will erase anything -- most phones these days store things in memory that is not affected by power loss (i.e., if that WERE the case, every time your battery ran out on your phone, you'd lose your phone book, settings, etc.). Of course, some phones could have backup batteries that are not accessible to the user...

What type of phone do you have and how does it connect to the car? If you have to plug the phone into a cable to get it to integrate into the car, then you do most likely NOT have Bluetooth, especially in a 2003.

I have to plug it in so it is not a blue tooth. I think I will try your idea of entering a bunch of numbers to override the top 8
Thanks
