So my buddy has his Datsun 510 on ebay right now. Its currently got a fully built sr20det in it, and I watched it make 401 rwhp. No one is bidding on it and he mentioned hating selling it, so we've been talking about pulling the motor and selling me the shell.

My next thought... throw an m50/s50 in it.. Maybe even m44 with DASC since the m44 is dime a dozen.

What do you guys think about this? Im sitting here at work researching 510's and I've owned a 280z before non-turbo with the L24 motor.

Sorry this is a bit off topic but kind of right on. Since we're here to discuss non native engine swaps and everyone else throws up stuff that doesnt belong here:eek:

I've seen write ups on rotary engines and silvia engines. I'm not familiar with the chassis to know if there would be any issues stuffing the M/S50 in there.

Yeah as I figured that most wouldnt be familiar. If a KA or SR series motor from Silvia and Skyline will fit, then there shouldnt be any problems with BMW engines.

Another thing that hit me, these cars look damn close to E cars. E21, E30, 2002. Haha. Just trying to do something different ya know.

sr engines are pretty beast. why dont u just put another sr in it ?

I guess that would probably be the best option.
I just have access and knowledge of BMW motors. Its something different I guess.

Tell neff tyler said to leave the beast alone bc its awesome. One of the fastest feeling cars ive ridden in.

Haha. Yeah we've had this conversation. He actually brought up parting it out. I think he really wants that motor in an s13/14 again.

Tyler? I dont know you do I?

the e21 and 2002 are very close relatives.

You'll have NO problem fitting a bimmer engine. But personally, I'd prefer an L20B, with a ka24E head. Makes the car drive like a go-kart

Love your collection of cars. And as far as taking the L20B and swapping the skyline head on, im not aware of that procedure. I've got a lot of knowledge on Honda and BMW motors so far so I'd basically just make it a project car and just troubleshoot my way through the install like I did on my car now.

L20B is the stock engine for the 510 right?

And the reason why I mention the BMW motor, I could probably pick up an m42 for dirt, like 200-600 bucks full deal. Tranny, block, manifolds, alternator, wiring harness, you name it. On several different motors. All the folks I know ditch em for m50 + in e30/36 etc. But anyways, even though the m42 is a turd, it would still feel quite nice and have tons of reliability and availability parts wise. Seem like a good move?

the l20 was rare in 510's, it was used in the 610, 620, 710, 720, and old nissan 200sx's

and the ka24e (E for electronically fuel injected) series motor was only ever used in small nissan pickups and the 1989-1990 nissan 240sx. the single overhead cam head fits onto the l20B very nicely, and makes a good bit of power.

ka24 became a DE (double overhead cam, electronically fuel injected) engine in 1991

Nissan motors are a lot better than bmw ones to work on, imo. They're simple, and easy to run and diagnose problems, and have no stupid designs, they're all practical.

Right on. Yeah I knew ka motors were in 240's I dunno what I was thinking. Sounds cool though! Sounds like I need to go junkyard diving and build a motor! hah. Thanks for the response, been a big help.

If I'm not mistaken the world record for most power on a stock sr20 bottom end was done here in Tally 549 rwhp at 20+ psi. The motor was in a FD rx-7

Yep, 550hp is what the stock bottom end is rated to.

Not bad for a 2.0

I think the Datsun 510 is a 2002 clone, very simular designs

Why not toss an S14 (E30 M3 engine) in it? It might not be the cheapest, but I think it would be pretty sweet!

I had a 93' SE-R and it was by far the best bang for the buck car I have ever owned. The SR20 engine is great and even better turbo-ed. Like other people have said, stick with this combo as it would be the simplest and very potent.

On a related subject, I'm shopping around to buy a 1975 or older BMW 2002 or another 524td to not worry about CA smog crap, and want to put a SR20DET into it. I've done some googling and have not seen anyone else do this to get some insight engine mounts and the like. Has anyone come across something like this?

Thanks!

PS. I'm looking to sell/trade my E36 M3 to get me started on this......

I love the Nissan motors. I wanted to do a swap with a Nissan V8 motor but try finding a nissan V8 hooked to a manual tran in the states.

Hate to burst your bubble, but there's a guy in malaysia that has a sr20 det powered 2002.

No doubt. Finding the motor is sort of hard, and to find one still in good condition with all cylinders firing is another price-wise. Good idea none-the-less.

MAKE IT ELECTRIC! Especially if its a fun car and not a DD, youtube the car "white zombie" kinda strange to see and hear a burnout with no engine/exhaust noise :-O
