Non-BMW mechanical ? Any guesses

So my friend in an A4 was driving last night and sudenly had the cabin fill with antifreze smoke... (I don't know if it came in the vents or just came in). He pulled off the highway and siad the engine was sounding strange... and then was sputtering some. He had it towed.

Any guesses?

+1 if it has oil in the radiator or the reservoir. Any other symptoms?? Or noises?

Funny. Those are the two things I told him... I could not reconcile how a heatercore could make it stall, however... which it was doing (I see I didn't expressly say that above).
