Go to AutoZone and have them check you check engine light. If it's your O2 sensor then you'll get a code telling you that your O2 sensor is bad.

hook car up to an OBD II scanner (borrow for free at local auto parts store) or a PEAKE code reader (need to buy or borrow one)

Good DIY here: http://www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/Exhaust/O2sensor.htm

There are several symptoms:
-Engine may surge and idle may become erratic.
-When it's cold, it will take longer than normal for it to warm up.
-High emissions.
-Engine may surge at highway speeds.
-Poor performance and fuel economy.
-May have black smoke from exhaust.
-No torque converter lock up.

before telling him to hook it up to an OBD II scanner...perhaps we should ask him to identify WHAT year his e38 is...it may not be OBD II compliant if its a 1995.

rparker...you might want to consider adding model year to your car info...or create a signature that includes the model & year...it's very important in that it helps us help you better. Not all e38s are the same...and not all 740i/iLs are the same either. For instance, there are 3 different V8 engines (M60/M62/M62TU), 2 different transmissions, and multiple upgrades and changes throughout the production run. :)

thanks a lot plik

I believe the pre cat is bad, I just bought the vehicle and that was the only code it gave me.

Is the swap difficult to do at home?

thanks for the help :buttrock

Very very easy. Just drive your girl up on ramps and slide right under. You don't have to do all four sensors at the same time, but you need to do both pre-cat sensors at the same time and both post-cat sensors at the same time. So you need to at least buy two pre-cat sensors.
