Just wanted to know which lsx engine would you guys go for. I have a 95 m3 which i'm planning to do an LSx swap. I hear too many good things about LS1 and LS2 and also about LS6. WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE. No need to specify specs. Would the ls1 for the GTO fit. I mean its the same ls1 correct.

LS2 FTMFW :buttrock:

oh ya, bigger the better :eyecrazy

Just make sure to handle the rear end so it doesn't twist up like a pretzel

Check out LS1tech.com for some more answers to your LSX questions. There are some aftermarket blocks coming out that will do 481cubes. I last looked at LS1 stuff about 3 years ago and just recently started looking at them again. All I can say is the performance growth of these motors is incredible.

My opinion: Buy a shitted out 318 or 325 to do the swap into. Dont ruin an M3. Preserve the goodness, seal for freshness my good sir. Seal for freshness.

Good condition LS1s are getting harder to find and the prices are going up. I found a pretty good deal on an LS1, but if I hadnt, I would have just gone for the LS2. Dont bother with an LS6, as there are only a few differences between it and the LS1, such as the intake, clutch, block, cam and heads....most of which people swap out anyway.

If you have the coin, go for an LS2. Otherwise, get ready to hunt for a good condition LS1.

The difference between the F-body LS1 and the GTO LS1 is the oil pan. I believe the GTO pan was shallower.

GTO pan has a front sump and is about the same depth, it is the only pan that works in a E24/E28/E31/E32/E34 swap. These are cars with rear steering and a BIG steering box that we have to get the headers around.

Many early model LS1s suffer from piston slap. I had it in my '99.
Doesn't really cost you any performance, but they can make a dieseling sound until they're fully warmed up and the pistons have expanded. A few have it so bad it never goes away though. Reason is GM overbored the #1 cyl. I think by 2000, or maybe '01, it had been corrected. But some people don't want to buy an engine w/it. so it potentially affects resale.

What does that leave you then, the rotating assembly?
The block does have some improvements over the LS1 block though.
Heads breath much better, but I'm sure you'd port them anyways if you are going through this much trouble. Plus you WANT an LS6 intake, not the other way around...

The block used in 02+ LS1s and LS6s are the same. Some 01 LS1s did get the LS6 block as well. All LS1s I believe received the LS6 intake beginning in 01.

Most of the big power guys are going to a FAST intake with 90mm TB over the LS6.
