What is happening when we start the car, "Trans. Fail Safe" indicator comes on and then goes off leaving arrows on both sides of the program indicator, the steering wheel moves up and down by itself, the radio doesn't work, the cruise control doesn't work, car runs Ok? This is happening about every other time we start the car. Can anyone help me with this problem?

A lot of strange electrical problems have been solved by replacing the battery.

Or the ignition switch.

your transmission is getting a low voltage error from lack of juice, i bet if you replace the battery and clear the codes you'll be all set

Do you still have the OEM battery or is it a replacement? If it's the OEM one, it is about time for a new one. Its been what 7 or 8 years on the battery more than likely. If it's a replacement one, you may want to make sure it meets the BMW specs for you vehicle. For the 7 series, I only know of two different replacements that meet the specs. One is by Interstate Batteries. Their battery would be a lst resort in my opinion. The best thing going for your dollar is the Autozone Duralast 49D. The more seaoned vets of this forum will chime in later with excellent advice. Good Luck!

Hey guys... what was the final solution to this... we have the very same thing happening to us....

We did replace the battery, but it did not resolve the problem.

We also replaced the alternator.

I'll stay with my original guess!:D

I had to replace my battery due to the trans msg. as well, but I would go with what the Guru above (Bimmerfixr) mentioned....ignition switch if the battery doesn't correct your issue.

Good Luck !!
