so if I am at high rpm 5000rpm + in say 3rd gear or even 4th and shift into 5th, the gear grinds a bit. I have redline 75w90ns less that 12k old? the car has 85k miles on it and I cant see it being the syncros....

It's your shifting. Slow down and learn the pattern. Let the shifter slide into gear, don't force it into gear.

my friend's subaru used to grind into fifth, the car only had 40k miles on it, it was the syncros

Sounds like your syncros. A syncro spins the slower of the 2 gears (in your case the gear on your engine is one speed and the syncro will spin up 5th) so they match. Since it seems your syncro is out, all you have to do is match engine speed to ground speed. Or you can float the gear but that will take some pratice. Bottom line, your tranny needs work it's not your shifting.

Cuuld be the synchros, you may also have an issue with the sector rod bushings...fifth and reverse are affected.

Ya it is definatley not my shifting... Ive been performance driving manuals (double clutching and heel and toe) and I have a good understanding of rev matching for 12 years, haha but anyways, I have a SSK so all the bushings in the linkage have been replaced... Do any of you think switching to MTL might help? it has helped me in the past with an older E21 with bad 2nd gear sychros? I have no problem ever engaging reverse or any other gear, I just find it strange that 5th gear seems to be a problem, and it is only at high rpm... if I shift at 75mph no issue at all.... I have experienced this issue on another E36 but that was a 318is and the guy badly mis shifted into 5th gear and had problems there after selecting 5th....

Synchros are going. Mine doesnt even want to go into first gear sometimes, i have to start out with 2nd, which isnt good for the clutch.

Get some Sync Mesh and put in the trans oil. It should straighten right out as long as it's not terribly grinding and just a little. I use to run TT Stealths in the past and synchros along with many other trans problems were always showing up.
