Just removed the rear bumper cover to clean up some rust on my rear quarter panel. My 328i (originally a canadian version) does not have the 2 torx bolts from the m3--at least that I could find. The 2 links above definitely help, but don't emphasize enough how difficult it can be to "slide" the damn thing off.
This is because of the bracket right behind the wheelwell on either side. ONce you get all the little round plastic rivet like pieces out (and the 8mm sockets on either side of the wheelwell), it would seem that it should slide right off. WRONG, you still have the brackets--I'm not sure how I got the cover off of the brackets-other than just tugging and bending, etc--not so easy as one think it should be. It didn;t slide! But, that could be because I could not see other components holding everything in place, since I did not have the means to lift the car much at the time...
Oh, and the plastic round rivet like thingies--just need to force them out--I used 2 screwdrivers on either side--and some made it and some broke. I was far too concerned about using them again. Just f*ck em up and get them out, and buy another set for installation...
Also, I WOULD recommend getting a set of the replacement clips (round rivet like things), since I basically had to destroy half of them to get them out--they do not come out willingly. You could probably get away with re-attaching the cover with the other half that remain intact. BUT, I would be certain to bear in mind that if you have to remove the bumper cover again soon for any reason, don't put in new clips until your job is totally finished. It's a pain.
Of course, like any of these DIY, the 2nd time is always so much easier.
Anyway, hope this helps:D

not sure why you had a hard time
i can take it off in 5 minutes
there's a bolt on each fender liner, then remove the bumper valence, remove the 2 torx bolts and the bumper slides off
catalyst.

pretty easy.. unfasten the inner fender liner, remove two torx bolts from brackets, bumper slides off.

Gotta love pelican parts :D
So are there 2 ways to remove the rear bumper?
1.Removing the plastic bumper and metal protection as attached together
2.Removing the plastic bumper only and leaving the metal protection attached to the car
Can someone please clarify.

Bump - id like to avoid $36 in expanding rivets if you can avoid taking them out.
