oh man so as i'm pulling on the street to my house i noticed that the temp light was on and the guage was pegged:mad:mad:mad, the eletric fan didn't come on and the belt is still on. i scared that a warped the head cuz i was driving at 80mph for 22 miles:(. i'm going to guess that the water pump broke or the thermostat is stuck. i left the hood open to let the motor cool off quicker
the cooling system is filled and i cracked the bottle open and its screaming hot (hotter then normal).
do you think i will need to do a head gasket or do i have a warped head

prolly not, if you where on the highway the air is adequate cooling. i myself have over heated on the highway due to radiator leak and 0 pressure and my motor is still ok. ive over heated 3 times so far and all in dire emergencys. one the motor cant handle it anymore you will hear knocking and the motor will shut down. you should be fine tho. the motor can take a lil punishment before something major breaks, and for the record my motor has 203xxx miles on it.

i dont reccomend driving on a motor that can overheat, i went a week without my car til a temp fixed my radiator. i have risked it tho. i would leave in the morning car is cold. then highway to work, no stopping at ALL if i got into traffic i was done, you will over heat when you get off the highway, just hope your work is close to the exit. w/e you do dont over do it, understand that pulling over and walking is a better choice then yea no motor. :)

Regardless of what you have been told, E36's generally blow head gaskets when they overheat. You may have dodged a bullet, so don't drive it again until you fix the coolant issue. And start checking (and saving) for a bad HG. Check it for months.

so i let my car idle up to temp and it was fine, then i drov it around the block, it was fine, so i took it for a short drive on the main road ( i took it to 6K) and the guage started climbing by the time i got home pulled in a parked the light just turned on and i turned it off. i'm going with bad water pump what do you think?
the bus system doesn't come out to my house and it stops arounf 10pm and i dont get off work till 11pm

Even if he did blow the head gasket, I wouldn't consider it a big loss. 245,000 miles, that car has had a good run, a VERY good run.

A 15 year old car with 245k and climbing, I don't think it's dumb at all to say that if it broke down right now, it wouldn't be a big loss. I'd be happy as hell that it lasted that long!

Well, the motor can last longer than that for starters, and driving it around causing an overheat on a working motor regardless of mileage is dumb.

Fully agreed, I was just saying that if the head gasket WAS blown due to his initial overheat, it wouldn't be thaaat big of a deal on a car of that age and mileage. It's easily replaceable, unless he was heavily modded, but I'm talking about stock for stock.
