I was just wondering, has anyone else had any problems with these? I ordered a set from Pelican Parts several months ago, and I spent the next few months replacing other parts trying to rid myself of a rear suspension clunk over broken pavement. I replaced the RTABs, Subframe Bushings, removed the rear swaybar, and installed 15mm spring pads (I have a Koni Sport Kit), all in the hopes of eliminating the noise, with no luck. The whole time I figured it couldn't be the RSMs, after all, I just replaced them with a supposedly better-than-stock mount.
Eventually, there was nothing left to replace, and I gave Pelican a call to see if there were any known problems with these mounts, or special installation instructions I was missing. They told me they didn't sell many of them, and that they recommend the Meyle mounts which are cheaper anyhow.
I ordered a set of the Meyle mounts, and finally had the chance to install them today. Naturally, the noise is gone. On inspection of the Repair Shop RSMs, it was clear that the inner sleeve of the bushing was able to move around enough to make contact with the surrounding plate, since there was a slight groove worn around the circumference of the outside of the sleeve. I am pretty confident that this contact was the source of my noise.
I also noticed that the Meyle mounts were a good deal stiffer. With the mount installed, but the shock bolt unattached, the Repair Shop RSMs allowed a whole lot of movement front-back and side-side in the shock, the Meyles, not so much. I really feel that if the Repair Shop RSMs used a stiffer rubber or a deeper cup for the bushing, they might not have these problems, but as it is, I would definitely not recommend them to anyone. They are too harsh and noisy for a street car, at least in my case, and not stiff enough for a race car. I am hoping Pelican will work with me for a refund on these, since I feel that the design is flawed, and I couldn't in good conscience sell this set to anyone else.
Hopefully the Meyles work out better. They may not last as long, but frankly, I'd rather deal with replacing the mounts once every couple years than an irritating clunk every day. Heck, it takes less than an hour to replace them, and half of that is getting the damn carpet out of the way :).
