Argh. I was one fax away from selling my car!

The deal was pretty much done. The guy committed over the internet and the phone. He sent his cousin over to check out the car (the buyer is from CT) and then after his cousin left, he leaves me a msg. telling me he's not interested anymore because he's been talking to people and his cousin about the car and he feels it's not "feasible" anymore . Then I haven't been able to find him online and he won't pick up the phone. Gawdamn.

Now my dad is so pissed because he had to wash the car in 20 degree weather (this isn't the first time) and he's tired of all these flaking people :complain That makes 6 flakes now and 3 low-ballers. Damnit, I think I'm gonna say f*ck it and keep my car as a fun car till it dies.

Sorry guys, just venting. Sympathy is welcome or you can point and laugh if you want to. I just needed to vent w/o any form of violence :orangesle

How come you're selling the car? By the way, sorry to hear about that. Why the hell did that guy think you're car wasn't feasible? What a fag, he didn't even see the damn car

Yeah, but apparently his cousin works for Carmax (like that means anything  ) But whatever, it was supposed to be for his wife and I feel bad for her because she's missing out on a nice car.

I was, keyword WAS, trying to sell it so then I could let my dad get an e46 m3 so we could share it since I am in college and I dont drive when I am in school and only drive on weekends.

Flakes=gotta have them :rolleyes:

Oh, ok. Are you still selling it? Hopefully everything will work out with the sale if you're still selling it. Looks like a really nice car

I know what you mean man. I have been trying to sell off a lot of parts too. People say they want it but then when it is time to send the money they rarely do. I ask a lot less then what the going rate is for the parts too. The thing that hurts the most is when people keep inquiring a bout parts that you already sold. :(

Selling a car is not easy. If I were you I would wait until the Spring to sell it. That is when most people are interested in buying cars. Should be A LITTLE easier to sell then.
Good luck

Yeah, selling a car is so much harder than selling parts and selling parts is tough!

Sean, no the car is now offically off the market and I dont think I'll be putting it back on. I'll probably keep it and then get a new car later on and use the 328 as a beater or track car.

Sorry to hear that chris...I guess its time to put a 6speed and a supercharger in instead...hahaha

That sucks Chris-to think you're really close to the sale and the guy flakes on you. You get all psyched and BAM the guy backs off. Actually keeping your car as a beater or track car down the road isn't a bad idea when you get a new car. That's what I did with my 325-I use it for my fun car for autocross and just use my Explorer as my daily driver. Your car is still pretty nice looking at your sig. Either way, good luck!

Hey......I work at CARMAX..I don;t know what you mean by that remark..

Anyways...I see how that would matter since I think his cousin can use his discount to save him large amounts of money. Plus his cousin would be able to find EXACTLY what he was looking for because he can transfer any car from 40 different stores..so........

In any case sux bad that he flaked on you though..good luck selling it though if you decide to do so.

My bad, I meant that was one of his excuses and I was simply rolling my eyes at that excuse because he didn't go into why he didn't want my car anymore. I wasn't saying ANYTHING bad about people who work at Carmax at all. Sorry about that.

Haha, alright, I really didn't mean to offend you or anyone that works at Carmax with that comment because I can see how it could be taken that way.

Dude, I've been getting so many flakers with trying to sell both the BMW and the WRX that I quit trying. I put my BMW up on Autotrader and posted about the WRX on some forums. A few low-ballers came calling and a couple serious folks checked it out. But, when it came time to start talking money xfer, they flaked. So, I have taken the stance that I will "passively" try to sell my cars. If the right buyer comes along and is willing to pay what I want, then they can have it. Otherwise, I will simply keep them at my parents' house or garage them when we move to NY.

Yeah, I know how you feel Phil, we have given up selling my car entirely now. I don't get it. People can be SO interested in the car, and even agree on the price, and commit to the deal, but when it comes down to inking the signature....BAM....they're gone :dunno Oh well, I'm past it now.

Phil, if you wanna keep that M Roadster somewhere safe, you can always keep it in my garage (3 car) and my car can just sit outside ;).......it'd have to be under the condition that I get to drive it once a week though :D

*coughleasecough* ... hehe...^__*...

Sorry to hear about that guys...NOW do you see why I decided to yank my Lexus off the market as well??? I don't mind lowballers; because hell, I lowball people as well....but, I never look at a car that I don't have the money for...I don't waste people's time like that....

Damn it, those people are probably the ones that took up your father's time Chris...GRRR...I'll kick their butts!!! ....

I still say it's the wrong time, Christmas bills are hitting everyone now .... try again in 2-3 months.....

Actually James, those are the guys who DID take up his time yesterday, he was b*tching about how he could have been driving out to the paint shop and hardware store instead of driving around I-270 showing the guy the car.

Plus the paint shop is being stupid, I think my dad is going to check out a different shop tomorrow if the one we use is closed at ODD  hours again today :dunno

For me, I think if (or when) the times come to move to NY, we'll just sell the WRX and I'll try like hell to just keep the M in NY. Maybe I can get Willy or Ron (themadhatter) to hook me up with a cheap garage in NJ or NYC. :D

Have you guys tried the more traditional method of putting it in the paper? My experience w/the Washinton Post has been pretty good. Its still a PITA to sell a car, but you eliminate many of the BSers that are o-line.

I've tried to setup GBs in the past. So many people are 'interested', but when it comes time to pony up the cash you can't find them. Shit, I'm interested in owning GulfStream. But I know I cant afford it, so I don't make an A-hole out of myself by bidding for one.

As James said, its a tough month to sell a car. This weather doesn't help anything either. If you can wait till March or April, it will be easier to wash the car and you might get more $$.

Good Luck.

I agree, try putting it in autotrader the MAGAZINE...rather than just online. You'll also have more success, b/c many people don't use the online to find cars...

Phil - depending on where in NY you go, let me know. Since we have an office up there, I might be able to try and locate a garage for you....

I so wish I didn't get my IS300 so I could have bought Phillip's WRX. I like WRX to begin with and his is one of the strongest with all kinds of goodies.

Ah~~~ Dang~~~

I think he means that 90% of the people who work at Carmax know nothing about cars what so ever, and I would have to agree. If you are an exception, I'm sure you can agree that your co-workers are morons.

I went with a friend to test drive a 99 M3, we walk up and say we were interested in a green M3 you have on the lot. The guy was like OK!, walks right up to a green Z3 and says "here ya go!" Ummmm, no. When we finally get to the car, he can barely put the car in first gear and drive it the 50 feet past the gate. He says nothing during the drive about the car cause he doesnt even know what it is. He was like "yeah, the AC works good!" Sure buddy, sure.

Anyhow, about selling a car on your own, it's crappy. I went through the same thing with my 98 GST. I knew it was worth more than those fools at the dealer or Carmax would give for it, so I dealt with so many people who back out at the last minute. If you have patience, you will find the right person who will appreciate it and pay what its worth.

Good luck!

I think that is an unfair comment, but ok everyones entitled to an opinion.

Most Carmax stores have at least 500 cars on their lot with inventory changing every day and new cars coming out all of the time, we are never going to know everything the new car dealer for that specific car is going to know.
I personally strive to have very good product knowledge, but not everyone is going to know what an m3 exactly, or even the difference between the 328 and the M3. I love cars so i probably know more about them than most people i work with, but its unfair to tell someone you have to learn about every single car out there..even higher end cars that we do not carry often.

I agree about him not saying anything about the car during the test drive...if you are on this forum you obviously know some things about the m3. I personally wouldnt want to listen to the sales consultant talk to me about the car....i want to listen to the car! The test drive has to be one of the most important part of the sales process and i think you learn more about the car by driving it than listening to me tell you the features.

anyhow, i think it was a bad representation on the sales consultants part..he shouldve been able to at least show you the right car..but i wouldnt hold him to having to tell you the specifications of the car.

A dealer is NEVER going to give you as much as you could sell a car for...its just plain and simple...thats just the difference between trade in and retail..

but anyways im not really fighting back against you cabby. I just dont think your comments were fair thats all..have a good day

Not trying to pick a fight ;) Just saying, I have been at the Dulles Carmax dozens of times, and have found maybe 2 folks there that really knew anything about cars in general. Why do people work there if they know nothing about cars? And I was surprised the guy couldn't drive a stick, isn't there some sort of screening process before people are hired?

My neighbor was a manager over there and he said the incompetence is widespread.

Hell, Carmax sold my friend an S4 that was clearly modified (ie big exhaust, blue and yellow fiber under the hood) and they said that everything was Audi approved. We went back the next day and they said they wouldnt warranty anything, when we asked them like 50 times if they would warranty the aftermarket parts and the engine as a whole. They bought it back and said it was a mistake it was even out there. So guess what happens then.....it's back out on the lot an hour later at the same price. I feel sorry for whoever buys that car. We even called and told them and they said "oh, sorry, that shouldnt be out there" but still never took it off the lot.

Anyhow, just saying..........if I were to trade in a car, I would take it to Carmax, they give you more than any dealer at least. :95

yeah...im not trying to pick a fight with you either...mostly because there is alot of truth in what you say...just clarifyiing is all

that s4 should never have been out there..
