Without. Mine didn't come with any but that's ok 'cause only a kid or midget could fit in the backseat anyway and I don't like either of 'em. ;) :stickoutt

why take them out? they dont look bad. they cover the roll over protection.

Mine are in, looks like something is missing with them out or makes the car look like a two seater.

after answering last night i started thinking . i wonder if the car would be quieter with them out? nothing to turbulate the air? did i just make up a word? haha

Mine also did not come with any, and I don't have any rollover to cover up. IMO I think the car has a smoother look from the side without their presence.

My '94 vert doesn't have them, and the M3 vert does. I like the look of leaving them in.

I leave mine in just incase someone rides upback (I've had few asain girlfriends;)
And I'm always worried that there head may be leaning back and the roll-bars might go off, hurting them????

My car doesn't have them and doesn't have the mounting for them. I also don't have rollover protection. Was rollover protection or rear headrests an option in '97 ?

Was available right from the beginning, or at least 1994.

Has nothing to do with the facelift.

My car originally didn't have the headrests, but I bought a replacement rear seat for mine off ebay since the rear seats were splitting at the top . . . and the replacement included the headrests. I just bought the mounting brackets from pelican and will probably mount the headrests soon. I think it makes the car look more complete.

Excellent. Any pics of the mounting brackets as I'd like to see how the headrests are locked in as they are very tough te remove.

Shame you can't retrofit the rollover bars.

the roll protection pads are away getting trimmed along with the doorcards and a converted e46 dashboard, the seats and headrests are e46 m3 coupe electric sports, front and rear.
those are the standard roll protection bars you can see that will get the pads refitted

fronts require the holes in the seat frames to be opened up a little to match the e36 mount points, the rears are massive amounts of work as they came from a coupe with a fold down armrest, base is an easy fit, the back is a total fabrication job.

oohh, i was thinking you had swapped from out from an e46 vert.

bbroony
03-08-2007, 02:16 PM
the intention was to only fit the fronts as they are fully electric and heated(once i get the heaters wired in)
but as with most projects its snowballed into something much much bigger, at least there is less chance of anyone else having the same interior in a vert.
the e46 vert fronts have the seatbelts in the seats which i dont like, the rears are'nt much different to the e36 except the headrests are thicker to cover the roll over protection too.

bbroony, this type of white leather looks really good.
I have black leather with dark blue metallic exterior and I am quite happy with it (rear headrests always in) but I must say that the white is an eyecatcher.
How do you keep away all these women when driving it?

Are you gonna use the e36 dials for the ventilation?

sort of for the moment, climate is possibly planned if i keep the car, but the e36 heater controls will be used possibly with the basic e46 controls(very similar, they just fit the aperture better or a custom made panel for the e36's.

this will give you an idea of the work involved, the e36 dash and the e46 dash as it was on delivery, untouched

Hmmm the e46 dash looks MUCH wider. I'm sure they are not that much wider IRL. (?)

its not far off, the photo was taken at an angle so does make the e46 dash look a little too long, still had to cut a few inches off each end, you cannot place the full e46 dash into the e36 for a test fit, its a lot more deeper and a bit wider, you cant close the doors, not even near untill you mod it.
i thought the rear seats were hard work until i did this!

the door panels are grey and finding 2nd hand black ones is almost impossible so the grey sections are getting done in black nappa and the inserts are going to be done in cornsilk to match the seats.
dashboard is going to be done in the same black nappa leather as the door panels and the panels will flow into the dash

That's great! What about the top plastic on the hood storage lid, as that'll be grey too then?

bbroony
03-12-2007, 03:22 PM
it is grey and will be for a little longer, need the funds to get other stuff done first, hopefully will get the tonneau cover done before topless summer fun starts.
the dashboard is a bigger job than i first thought but mainly due to the fact that no one else(bar one guy who hasnt finished yet)has done it so there is very little info on what fits and what doesnt.
i did get a lot of help from jon_m3 from e36coupe.com as he is doing one at the same time.

no one will sell you an e46 dash complete with trims, switches, glovebox, airbag panel etc etc, so you spend a lot of time sourcing parts from e bay, dealers and breakers.this slows you down a lot as you need to size parts up for the cut to fit job.
the rear seats have NEVER been attempted so that was time consuming and i thought it was going to be the hard part until i started the dash.

they can be pulled out but cannot be tilted and locked in an extended position.

both for me but mine are custom fit e46 versions, they dont exactly tilt, just extend from the headrest itself as well as from the seat back
