Well, I'm pretty sure this is what's wrong with it: http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/maintenance/electrical/capacitors.htm

I noticed it on a cold morning a few months ago, but in the last couple days it's happened a lot more frequently. Barely any RPM (doesn't go above 1000), no fuel, temp, gas, or speedo. Has anyone done this repair themselves and how hard is it? Time to find an old VCR, get a soldering iorn, and start practicing!

This has happened to me on a couple cold mornings as well, its deffinitly a pain in the ass. Everytime I would shut off the car and leave it for a couple hours the next time I went to start it the gauges worked. How cold was it when you fired it up?

It wasn't yet freezing out, but it was definitely below 40. It seems that once I cut the heat on and the cabin warmed up, they started working (when I was nearly home, no less).
