My car was recently rear ended and the muffler tips got messed up, so I am getting a new cat back. The insurance quote for a new factory muffler plus installation is around $950.
Here are my options:
1- have a new OEM exhaust installed with no out of pocket expense,
2- Pay an additional $400 to have a new Dinan exhaust installed
3- Take the $950 and buy another exhaust to be installed
What does everyone recommend that I do???
Thanks
OEM is boring, Dinan is a rip-off. Go aftermarket for sure. (option 3)
Having 462 posts I imagine you already have an idea of which one you want.

option 3, buy a used aftermarket exhaust and have money to spare

I would go with Eisenmann.

ps, you should just take the 950, but one on here for 500 used put it on yourself (its bolt on=not that hard) and take the 450 and by some depos and a cosmos intake
problem solved:evil2

^ Good point...I have DINAN as well and I enjoy every bit of it. They're expensive new yes, but you should be able to find a good used one for half the price. Or hell go with another kind, but buy it and install yourself and pocket the rest......if theres any to spare:)

Or. Best for me, you could buy my 96 stock M3 canister. haha
Have you listened to the stromung or UUC systems?

Dinan and the dealership both told me that the price on the exhaust is $1299. There is a 10% ($130) mail in rebate, bringing the price down to $1170.
I would really like Dinan, but am not sure I want to part with additional cash. I have also considered getting a UUC System U - I could save even more by buying one of their mufflers with the weld splatter on the muffler (extra $90 off).
Definitely want round tips...
Don't want the car to sound ricey...
Would like an exhaust that will add value to the car in case I decide to move into a 540...
DIY install is no problem.
I am trying to work out a deal with the dealership to get a better deal on the Dinan. (i.e., free install or lower price...they arent very responsive) Anyone know where I can get a better deal?

Eisenmann or Stromung you can easily add value with. Or, sell the exhaust separately in trade for a stocker and you'll get 90% of your investment back.

I too have a dinan. I really like it, i bought it used for 250.
I would have been mad if I had to pay the full retail of over a grand. So my vote for you would be number 3.

Whatever you do, don't buy Dinan. $1000+ for a catback muffler? Not too mention they were repackaging OEM mufflers and selling them under the Dinan brand (Gen I). How many of the first gen Dinan exhausts have rusted through? Weak welds, over a thousand bucks, and a lifespan similar to the OEM system. Of course, Dinan eventually caught enough flak that they designed their own E36 exhaust, but still the principle remains that they were gouging people for quite a while.
I would buy OEM and pocket the rest. Otherwise, pick up an AA, Stromung, or UUC. If you want a little more aggressive sound, get the UUC RSC36.

I just finished putting my Stromung system on. Sounds really sweet. A lot fuller and deeper sounding than stock. Was kind of looking for it to be a little louder - maybe wish I went with the UUC RSC36; my other choice.
I don't think I could have went wrong either way.

u had mentioned that u want a system that increases the value of the car in case u buy a 540. then your best option is go with the oem . listing the car as stock with a new stock exhaust would be a great selling feature . we all mod the shit out of our cars yet if we go to buy one everyone wants a stock untouched car
IowaLawM3
02-14-2007, 08:19 PM
good point. I am not sure when I would make the change and wouldn't mind something a little more aggressive in the meantime. I am thinking about a UUC exhaust ... either rsc36 or U.
any comments?
is there anyone that thinks a new dinan is worth $1000?

^ This is a very good point.....something to consider instead of wasting your money on aftermarket.

I have a Dinan, it's the best muffler I've heard but it's extremely over priced. AA is my second favorite over B&B, borla, supersprint and a few others I've heard.

Get an AA for $700 and split the rest with everyone who has responded to this thread.

dude, dinan sucks! So stop posting about the Dinan!
If you're serious about getting a full exhaust, you could get a used AA track pipe, and used AA GenIII exhaust for under that, save your money and don't buy a new Dinan, they are just ripping you off. Anything dinan costs $$$ just because it's stealership approved...
GotCone?
02-15-2007, 01:01 PM
3- Take the $950 and buy another exhaust to be installed
Buy new or a used cat-back of your choice and have lots of money left over.
I'd suggest Stromung

You must know which exhaust you want, so I vote for option 3 and buy a used exhaust from someone on the board that bought the wrong one or is "upgrading"!

Stromung is civilized. Doesn't get on your nerves like UUC TSE I had.
Fortunately, I bought mine when they were a little over $500 shipped.
Stay away from Dinan...way overpriced.

Anyone know of a deal on the UUC RSC36?
My personal preference would be an exhaust that is somewhat low and rumbly...not too ricey...and loud when i want it to be.
I like the way the RSC36 sounds.
I didnt think that the sound clips on understeer were very grand...possibly an injustice to this well-touted exhaust?

I have a DINAN and its awesome. It came on the car and I never would have spent the $ for it but I'm glad I have it. Last car I had I bought a AA on ebay for $350 shipped and I liked that A LOT. I was however going to buy a stromung for my car if it hadn't come with the DINAN.
Either way>>> BUY USED, it's the only thing that makes sense.

No one has seen a Gen 1 Dinan exhaust for years. I've had a Dinan exhaust for 6 years and it's fine and sounds awesome. If its price is too much to swallow, go get a cheaper one....its your car, get the one you like.
While people are bitching about exhaust prices: A buddy of mine just put a $15K exhaust on a Ferrari F360 Spider.

GET A ROGUE ENGINEERING DMS, the exhaust is a beast when you get on it, and its really civil when you are generally driving.
Highly recommend it.
