View Full Version : Today is not my day (windshield woes)

Wrong side of the bed or something, I don't know. I put a few neat cracks in my windshield when the right wiper arm, sans wiper blade, pried loose from my hand and smacked the glass, while I was reinstalling the blade. It was the last in a series of minor disasters to happen today (the day'sn't over yet, but I intend to spend the rest of it curled up in bed with a bottle, because it's been rough and needn't continue). So...any idea what it'd cost to fix? Can it even be fixed, or is replacement my only option?

You may need to replace that. If it were like a small spider crack you may get away with a repair but longer cracks are just not repairable. At least that is what I can tell.

hey man, it happened to me too last year. I found a glass shop on Craigslist that was running a sale... i think a new windshield installed cost me around $150.

Nice, there needs to be one of those in the Atlanta area as I have a small crack along the bottom of my windshield. The wipers cover it :)

Take it to a quality auto glass shop immediately! Not sure of the damage, but IF it is repairable waiting will make it worse--or even worse no longer repairable. I once had a chip that then turned into a small crack then a bigger one that grew daily until it beautifully obstructed the entire winshield. The glass shop said they could have fixed the chip for $20, but the winshield was hundreds. Doh!

That little chip can turn into an expensive adventure :) Happened on my friends Nissan. Like you said a $20 repair turned into a few hundred dollar repair.

Evidently it's not repairable. The biggest crack is a good 14-15" long. And it's from the inside :confused. No idea how that happened, but it'd be a lot harder to patch up even if it weren't so big. So replacement it is. 280 bucks at a local glass shop. An acquaintance of mine said that it might be possible to replace it with a plexiglas (sp?) windshield, which would be lighter and have better sound insulation. Anybody know anything about this?

Look on the bright side...

think of this as an opportunity to replace a 15+ year old windsheild that is full of tiny pits and scratches, and in which it becomes impossible to see out of when you have sun glare...

Ehh...thanks for the half-full glass, but my windshield was actually quite nice. Excepting the crack, it's probably a lot nicer than one I'm going to find at a junkyard. So anyone know anything about plexiglas ones?
