i took the M to a local independant auto repair shop to further investigate my "clogged exhaust" issue... they didnt charge me anything for the use of one of the lifts and an infared heat gun :buttrock

so the car was good and warmed up, cats should be at temp and working. i checked the temp of the exhaust tubing just before the cat and it was 225 and then checked it after the cat and it was 215. it was the same on both left and right sides. Am i wrong, or shouldnt the temp of the exhaust tubing after the cat be atleast 100 degrees hotter than before the cat?

i've driven my car only with the headers and it was deafening. i don't know how you took it up to 140. a cop would be able to hear it from 10 miles away!

Yea I am curious as to why it would be hotter post cat myself??

ducky328i

since the cat is restrictive, exhaust gases get concentrated in that area raising the temperature there and throughout the rest of the exhaust system...

dont know that for sure but it seems like a reasonable explanation to me...

there was a noticable drop in low rpm torque, the car really wanted to stall when i let the clutch out. it's hard to say how much better it pulled at the top of the rpm range with just the seat dyno.

i will try this test when i can get my hands on a vacuum gauge tomorrow.

"To diagnose a plugged catalytic converter, you can check intake vacuum or exhaust backpressure. To check intake vacuum, connect a vacuum gauge to a vacuum port on the intake manifold. Start the engine and note the vacuum reading at idle. Then increase engine speed to about 2,500 rpm and hold steady. Normal vacuum at idle for most engines should be 18 to 22 inches Hg. When the engine speed is increased there should be a momentary drop in vacuum before it returns to within a couple of inches of the idle reading. If the vacuum reading is lower than normal and/or continues to drop as the engine runs, it probably indicates a buildup of backpressure in the exhaust. Remember, though, that intake vacuum can also be affected by retarded ignition timing and valve timing. What's more, some engines are much more sensitive to small changes in intake vacuum than others, so checking backpressure rather than intake vacuum may give you a better indication of what's going on."

So you didn't have your cats either? I have heard it is very bad to run a car with absolutely no exhaust like that....I was told it damages the valves because there is no back pressure.....

+1 it can without a properly tuned car, I deff wouldn't try it.

on Gilbert Rd. south of Hunt Hwy. it's flat and straight, un-occupied indian reservation land.

and i know for a fact that no physical damage was done to any part of my engine by doing this ;)

i dont know why. we have test engines at work that have been running without any exhaust at all, not even manifolds... with no damage occuring.
