Im still trying to round up all the special tools needed to work on the bimmer. For vw there is vag com and that can scan read and clear codes. What should i get for the bimmer? I have a CEL when im on the highway and not on power.
I also need to reset my service light at the next oil change.
Thanks

i think there are a variety of tools for the job. just search under "reset tools," and it should give you all the info. you need.
btw, i really like your car. even the reverse rake kind of works!

I have the peak research tool. It reads codes, clears them, resets oil and inspection lights. Pretty cool little tool.

Get the old and good MoDiC or a GT1 ;)
The aftermarket tools don't do everything.

You on crack? You can not only beat it, but for less than half the cost.

It does a lot more than the peake tool, it just doesn't reset the SI light (which can be done by 3 cents of 16 gauge wire and 2 nails.) Plus it will work on ANY OBDII car, not JUST bmw's built between certain years like the peake tool.

Thanks but it sits flat its the fenders. When its sitting flat in my garage the rear is 1/8inch higher. I have to change it tho Im putting a stereo in and that will make the rear sag some.
Ok thanks guys i will look in to them. I would likw something that will do about everything. I just dont want to be spending 1000 on a tool to reset everything.
About how much do they run for a nice unit?Oh and my cars a 94 so i think its obd1. I ment to post this in the non M e36 forum but im getting answers here so its cool.
You don't need a scan tool for obdI. You can use the free stomp test. Turn the ignition to on (don't start it) and then press and release the gas pedal fully 5 times in a row. The check engine light will blink in a specific sequence, usually starting with a 1.

SWEET! and the oil light?

There's a guide somewhere that tells you which pins to jump in the diagnostics port - I THINK it's 11 and 14 but please, check before doing it.
I always took two nails that fit in the ports, and soldered a wire to both (or just short them by wrapping the wire around 'em.) It's kind of ghetto but don't listen to what people say - there's nothing wrong with doing it this way, people have been doing it since their warranties ended on their e30's in 1985. ;)
