any of you guys with S50 running OBD2 midpipes having troubles with smog test?
especially here in LA.
mine has a high HC
one reason would be bad O2 sensor, which might make sense since the sensor only read 3 cylinders

You'll need to put an H pipe between the two and have the O2 sensor read both banks. OBD1 cars run better when the sensor reads all 6 cylinders, too.

Not necessary.
Make sure you have new plugs, or atleast have changed all of your plugs recently. And definitely make sure that you have a new o2 sensor. I passed here in PA and the tech said that may car was reading like a new one.
And warm up those cats first!!!!!

I passed smog with OBD II pipes and o2 reading only 3 cylinders. I'd make sure all your smog related parts are in working order, cats, o2, plugs, coils, various filters etc.
That said, James is right about reading off all 6 cylinders. Too bad it's a real pain to hack up a OBD II midpipe to mount one 02 sensor that reads all 6 cylinders.
I'm eventually going to go with a system that consists of long tube headers to Y-pipe (which will hold the single o2 sensor) to aftermarket cat to 3" muffler.

hmmm funny your car runs well at all when the engine is only seeing half the cylinders! The O2 is one of the engine's main inputs for how the engine is preforming, if it only can get half the info it should really be throwing the mixture off.
