E39 Towing

Is it possible to tow anything with an E39 540 wagon? I might need to get a wagon or SUV soon, and if I do, it would have to be able to tow something if need be. I've looked for tow ratings, and can't find any for the 540 wagon. Is this possible? What are some negatives about doing this? Does BMW offer a hitch?

there is a factory bmw hitch, but like most bmw parts, it's not cheap at something like $700. Someone posted the part number on the roadfly e39 board a couple days ago, may want to do a search there.
