I am going to college in the fall and have two options for a car to take down.
A) Sell the 2002 we have had since 1982 and get a '02ish 330ci
B) Put $15000 into getting the 2002 restored professionly, and take it to college
this is one of the hardest decisions i have had to make. ANY ONE HAVE ADVICE/WISDOM?:help

Keep the '02. I dont have one, but I will pick one up soon to start a restoration. I will be going into college with my ranger as a DD and my 02 as a project. I'm stoked. I honestly dont know why anyone would want to sell an '02. They are lovable. The 330 will never match the driving experience. You have the rest of your life to buy a 330, but do you have the rest of your life to restore an '02 with so much history (especially family history)?

May I suggest :
C) Keep the '02, take $2K out of those $15K and get yourself a decent E21 to take to college (parts are relatively cheap and they are easy to work on) and use the other $13 K to do your '02 the way you want it. Another alternative to the E21 would be one of those California '02's that can be had for reasonable money because they can't be smogged over there.
I'm with Harry. Keep the '02. But look into getting a '91 318is for a daily driver. You can find a good one in the $3,000 - $4,000 range. They're almost as fun to drive as an '02, but have the amenities and reliability of a modern car.

Ideal would be to get maybe something like e36 325 and sell it after college and use the profit off that to redo the '02 but my dad is convinced there is nowhere to keep it for five years. but thanks for your input i will talk to him about the e21 or another '02. where would i go to find one of these california ones.

For Cali '02's, you can check the Craigslist ads for cities there.
Gordon over at the faq board frequently posts a listing of the ads appearing on several CA cities.
Here's one posted by another member for $2500. Looks pretty solid.
