View Full Version : forever black or back to black for moldings?

I'm waiting for my perfect moldings; but, in the meantime.

1) what's the best way to strip the wax off the moldings? Do I need to remove the moldings?

2) how many clips are needed for the moldings (I'm sure I'll break some -- including front and rear bumper)

3) forever black - this is a dye??? If so, I should remove the moldings then right? Is this a good one to use in lieu of back to black?

4) back to black -- I've used this but been disappointed -- after a good rain, I need to reapply...which is B.S. in 15 degree weather.

Any other recommendations other than painting them moldings?

TIA!

I second that Back to Black comments. They don't last long at all.

Would like to hear some Forever Black feedback.

Forever black works well, but it is difficult to get a good clean crisp look to it. It runs pretty easily. I just did my door handles with Forever Black, but am going to reapply because I noticed a couple of drips (I think I used too much). I would recommend it though, last much longer since it is a dye than Back to Black.

Forever Black works well. Go to the hardware store and buy a small foam brush, trust me. You can also take the moldings off or tape them off.

I have never tried on the door handles.

Here's mine that I did over a year ago.

How do you remove the moldings? Do they just pop out and snap back in?

I use the Back-to-Black and like how it works. Mind you, I do it on a weekly basis when it is nice out.....

is the cleaner that comes with the kit really needed? or can i just use something like simple green and just buy the dye?

TIA.

after trying several different cleaners to try and make the moldings black again i used shout (the spray stuff for clothing stains) i sprayed it on a rag and rubbed the rag on the moldings, they are not bright black, just stock color w/o any wax or other residues.

Yeah, I have used a combination of three parts water to one part white vinagar on the moldings. It strips the moldings of all the "back to black", "forever black" and whatever else you can buy at Kragen for $6+ a bottle. It is a trick I learned from a good friend of mine, he is a Professional Auto Body/Paint guy. He claims that all the stuff on the market makes the molding worse and just builds up, plus most are marketing scams. He claims that a simple cleaning (with vinagar solution) makes them look new again. New looking might not be "shinny", but it is the best look IMHO. Plus, it draws attention to your paint (my car is Cosmos). The other trick is to NEVER use soap of any kind (sorry DAWN lovers) on your car EVER. The soap is what builds up on moldings and begins to turn them white-ish. And if you need to use soap on your car, you aren't cleaning your car enough.

Don't use the attached applicator on the Forever Black bottle directly on what it is on your car that you are applying it to, because you will for sure get drips if you do it that way. Instead, press the bottle applicator on a sponge or similar applicator and apply to the car using the sponge. It is very hard to control how much comes out of the bottle if you use it directly on the surface.

Meguires tire wet. Use it on the moldings and be amazed. Lasts 10x as long as back to black. Target was out of Meguires tire wet, I tried Mother's and tire wet as well as back to black and neither last near as long.

mmmm grape...

I've used the Meguiar's Endurance stuff on the moldings...

Now tell me what's bad about it. I've noticed it takes many coats to get the moldings to look uniform in color-- streaking can occur, also.

I am indeed!

The streaking can be limited by just going over it a second time with the pad or a rag.
